Roosevelt Jones, the 6'3 class of 2011 guard from O'Fallon Township High School in O'Fallon, IL has verbally committed to
Butler University. Jones made the commitment today while on an unofficial visit to the Butler campus. He chose the Bulldogs over
Southern Illinois, Illinois State, Missouri State and
Indiana State.
While all of the aforementioned Missouri Valley Conference schools extended scholarship offers to Jones, everyone (including us) has felt for some time that Jones was a strong Butler lean. That is because Jones sees himself being a perfect fit for the Bulldog's system and we wholeheartedly agree. Combine that with the huge amount of momentum that Butler now enjoys as the result of their run to the NCAA national championship game earlier this month, and it is no surprise that it didn't take head coach
Brad Stevens long to close the deal after Jones arrived on campus today.
We first wrote about Jones last summer after watching him turn in impressive performances at the
NIKE Peach Jam and since that time he has been one of our favorite players to watch from the 2011 class in Illinois. That is primarily because there isn't a player in the state who plays any harder on a more consistent basis. Simply put, Jones is high energy all the way and is a "warrior" in the truest sense of the word.
Although we list Jones as a guard, he is actually capable of playing as many as three positions on the floor--the 1, the 2 or the 3. Jones has immense upper body strength, does a great job of establishing inside position and has a great nose for the ball. As a result, he is one of the best rebounders that you will find for a player his size. He is also a solid ball handler and decision-maker and a very good passer. While we like Jones' offensive versatility, he may be an even better defender, as he has the ability to guard opponents either on the perimeter or in the post.
The only thing lacking in Jones' offensive repertoire is a jump shot and thus has been labeled by some as a tweener. However, as we have stated before, we believe that Jones is another one of those players where position may not matter all that much.
To top everything off, Jones knows how to win, as he led his O'Fallon team to a fourth place finish in the Class 4A state tournament this past March. He is also one of the driving forces on a very talented
St. Louis Eagles 17-under traveling team squad.
Illinois Prep Bulls-eye extends kudos to Stevens and his coaching staff on a great get.
