Maybe the biggest reason for optimism is the debut of 5-8 freshman point guard P.J. Thompson, who Lenz said “always goes 100 percent, has a great attitude and fits our program to a ‘t.’” Thompson is the son of LaSalle Thompson, a 1991 Indiana All-Star at Pike who played at Ball State and Indiana State.
“He’s a name people are going to know not just this year, but the next four years,” McClelland said. “P.J. obviously has some God-given skills, but he’s a kid who really wants to play basketball. He’s always wanting to be in the gym and I don’t think the change (to varsity) will be that significant. The biggest change will be playing seniors instead of kids who are the same age. He’ll adapt and adjust and be fine.”
Thompson studies the game and quickly named some of the better point guards in the area he’ll be facing this season: Pike’s Marquis Teague and Zavier Turner, North Central’s Ronnie Johnson and Howe’s P.J. Boutte.
“I have expectations for myself,” Thompson said. “It’s going to be a big adjustment going against older players, but that’s what the hard work in the summer is for – to get ready for the season.”
His pops is his AAU coach I believe. If he's visiting, I'm going to guess not.Wonder if his dad's experience at ISU will negatively impact his thought process?
