The PAC / MWC split is about the dumbest thing in realignment that I've seen so far. The MWC (or Pac 14) with Wash St, Oregon St, and Gonzaga would have been a terrific conference all-sports conference. Instead both sides became weaker all-sports conferences in my opinion.

The real winner in all of this was the AAC. They flirted with adding OWSU and ultimately decided to not extend invites. Then later on they had 4 members publicly humiliate the Pac 12 in turning down bids. Ultimately the Pac had to settle for a school that the AAC had no intentions of adding anytime soon.

Congrats to them.

So we've had this, rumor of Illinois State talking to the MAC again, Missouri State leaving... MVFC may be on the cusp of falling off.

Good. It doesn’t do us any favors playing in it. I will say good for NDSU if they get the invite, they deserve it. If ILSU leaves for the MAC that would be a pretty big blow to the Valley. It’s not like they dominate the conference but they are a perfect institutional fit for the valley and could create a dominoe effect

What would it cost ISU Red to join the MAC, and why would they as far as any return? Just to be in FBS?

Based on recent reports regarding potential expansion, joining the Mid-American Conference (MAC) for football as an FBS-level member involves a significant, eight-figure financial commitment. As of early 2026, proposals for new members, such as Sacramento State, have included:

Entrance Fee: An estimated $10 million+ to join the conference.

Revenue Forfeiture: New members may be expected to forgo conference revenue for a period, which could add up to another $2 million in missed income.

NCAA Transition Fee: A separate $5 million fee is required by the NCAA to move from the FCS to the FBS level.

Total Estimated Costs:
The total cost to join the MAC as a new member can exceed $15 million when combining the entrance fee, forfeited revenue, and NCAA transition fees.

Context for Costs:
TV Revenue: The current MAC/ESPN media rights deal pays existing schools roughly $1.5–$2.5 million per year, meaning new schools often have to wait to receive a full share of revenue.

Comparisons: For context, other conference shifts, such as North Dakota State moving to the Mountain West, are projected to cost around $17 million in total fees.

MAC Financial Situation: The MAC is considered to have lower resources compared to "Power Four" conferences, making high entrance fees a significant barrier for expansion.

I actually think this move could come back to bite NDSU if SDSU doesn't move up. NDSU fans will be excited about this for a couple of years, but then reality is going to set in. SDSU can easily just make USD, who is already a rival, their big rivalry game now; while NDSU will basically lose all of their rivalries and alienate themselves. SDSU can continue competing for national championships, which will be easier for them to do now that the path has cleared out more, while NDSU is playing in a bowl game no one cares about with a bunch of second stringers because the starters don't want to play in it.

Personally I think SDSU should just stay where they're at. At the end of the day SDSU won the only game against NDSU in a blowout that anyone will ever remember anyways, and that was the national championship game in 2023. They can still keep their rivalries with USD and UND and be fine.

Outside of the money aspect, which is all anyone cares about, I think a lot of G6 FBS schools would be better off doing what Idaho did several years back and drop down to FCS.
