Thank you for your congratulatory wishes for Matt. You may view this year's honorees at www.oldspiceredzoneplayer.com
Matt is thrilled to be included as an Old Spice Red Zone National Player of the Year. He has been an outstanding player and more improtantly a son that I can be proud of. He has inspired those around him to dream of success, he has played hurt, led by example, and developed friendships with team mates that will last a lifetime. His accomplishments are not his, he will tell you. . he could not have done it without his line and his receivers.
Some have questioned his inclusion for this honor. Each team has access to nominate their red zone player of the year by filling out a 3 page nomination form, a waiver, send a picture, and have their player help fill out a page answering questions on leadership and performance. I was told by the add exec that handles the selection process for the mid-west that they received 1 application from Indiana! More players in Indiana may have been deserving but through the selection process viewing thousands of applications, (4000 last year) Matt was fortunate enough to have been selected.
Many have and will take shots at Matt's skills on the field but his true grit and determination have allowed him to thrive when others doubt his ability. I understand the power of the pen (in this case the net) where only the last person writing has the ability to win by cutting players, coaches, and teams down to better their "position" without regard to whom they hurt.
Those who read this forum find funny, insightful, and newsworthy information interjected throughout with wreckless banter that borders and sometimes is slanderous toward players, coaches, and communities that actually hurts the game we "love".
I would ask those who post on this and other forums to be reminded that you cannot better your position in life (or football) by cuttting others to benefit yourself.
The question I leave you is:
A Builder or a Wrecker?
I passed one day through a lonely town,
and saw some man tearing a building down.
With a "heave" and "ho" and a husky yell,
they swung a beam and a side wall fell.
I asked the foreman "Are these men skilled?
The type you'd hire if you had to build?"
"Oh no" he chuckled, "oh no indeed,
the common laborer's all I need.
Why I can destroy in a day or two,
what builders have taken weeks to do."
I thought to myself as I walked away,
which of these roles have I tried to play.
Am I a builder, who works with care,
making his tools a ruler and square.
Shaping my peers to a well made plan,
helping them be the best they can.
Or am I a wrecker who walks around,
content with the labor of tearing down.
