Iowa: We have heard a bunch of names mentioned as possible candidates for the defensive coordinator position. Some that sources close to the program tell us have a good chance at the job include Ron Aiken (Arizona Cardinals defensive line), Phil Parker (Iowa defensive backs), Brock Spack (Illinois State head coach) and Darrell Wilson (Iowa linebackers).

Is Spack...

under fire in Bloom/Norm?

DIdn't he spend about 15 years or so as a FBS DC? Why go back?

Bit of a difference from Iowa and purdue but it hasn't been the smoothest ride ever. Other than this past year fans of illinois state haven't been the happiest with him and the job he has been doing there.

Spack was underwhelming as a DC at Purdue. I never understood the love for the guy. I get they dont exactly get the pick of the litter recruiting wise, but he is talked about like he is a great defensive mind. I've saw his defenses get absolutley torched before and wondered what all the fuss was about.

Their defense at Illinois State was much improved this year. It was amazing how much better they were. That probably had more to do with players they added, but still impressive.

That said, I don't think he has a real shot at the Iowa job. They have a couple of likely candidates higher on their list.

You are thinking of more recent. When he was at Purdue he had one of the top 5 Defenses in the nation several years. Purdue had a heck of a defense for a while. Not to mention they had a abundance of future Pros. His last few years were rough, but the talent was pretty bad. I thought it was remarkable he could turn Purdue's D into great one and mold players to be future pros.

What's the difference?

Know some purdue fans that are not fans of the current coach for some obvious reasons

ferentz got off to a good start but I've never heard a lot of non-Iowans RAVE about Iowa football...
they've been pretty pedestrian lately

Let's just say this: if it came down to at Iowa or purdue, who would get the more prestigious coach? I would bet on teams who have been to BCS bowls recently.

That's not true. First of all, Iowa won the Orange Bowl in 2010 and they've had a winning, albeit somewhat disappointing record each of the past two seasons. Ferentz name comes up in coaching rumors again and again. He was even the first name mentioned for Penn State but quickly shot it down. He's established a standard of winning. A 7-5 or 8-4 season (which has been the worst they've done for most of his tenure) is now considered a disappointing season by most Iowa fans.

Purdue had a good thing going for a while, but now they seem to be sinking to Indiana's pitiful level.

Huh? Are they drafting coaches or are you talking about the schools' willingness to shell out $$

The H-Eyes also had some pretty middling seasons between the Rose and Orange Bowls...

Back to Spack, again; why leave a HC job at in the (arguably) the top FCS conference to become a Big Ten DC again?

He may, if so, I haven't heard/read that Spack's on the hot seat in Bloom/Norm... If he does, it's a step backward isn't it?

Gonna say most teams in the Big 10 (especially Indiana and Purdue) would be beyond thrilled to get a coach who could turn things around like Ferentz has at Iowa and produce a resume like this. Hell, even Notre Dame fans would kill for that record.

1999 Big Ten 11th 1 10 — — —
2000 Big Ten 8th 3 9 — — —
2001 Big Ten T–4th 7 5 Won Alamo Bowl vs. Texas Tech, 19–16 — —
2002 Big Ten T–1st 11 2 Lost Orange Bowl vs. USC, 38–17 8 8
2003 Big Ten T–4th 10 3 Won Outback Bowl vs. Florida, 37–17 8 8
2004 Big Ten T–1st 10 2 Won Capital One Bowl vs. LSU, 30–25 8 8
2005 Big Ten T–3rd 7 5 Lost Outback Bowl vs. Florida, 31–24 — —
2006 Big Ten T–8th 6 7 Lost Alamo Bowl vs. Texas, 26–24 — —
2007 Big Ten T–5th 6 6 — — —
2008 Big Ten T-4th 9 4 Won Outback Bowl vs. South Carolina, 31–10 20 20
2009 Big Ten T-2nd 11 2 Won Orange Bowl vs. Georgia Tech, 24–14 7 7
2010 Big Ten T-4th 8 5 Won Insight Bowl vs. Missouri, 27–24
2011 Big Ten Legends Division 4th 7 5 Insight Bowl vs. Oklahoma

And like it or not, DC at Iowa is a much, MUCH better job than DC at Purdue or HC at Illinois State. I don't even think he'll get it because they have other candidates they seem to like more.

You know exactly what I mean, support, better recruiting and better pay. Purdue in football is a dead end job.

They screwed themselves when they hired Hope, they should have pursued Sumlin when he was still an A&M ass't.

Not sure if it was $$$ or something Tiller wanted; he coached Sumlin, and Sumlin worked with/for him at three programs

And purdue football is worlds beyond gloomington

It's funny, I never defend Iowa to non-Iowa fans in Iowa (the Iowa State or UNI crowds) but with anyone from outside Iowa, I feel compelled to. Probably because much like the Indiana schools (outside of PU and IU in football - they're about as pitiful as we were prior to the Miles-era) deserve more notice and respect.

Why?

$$? Or something else?

I'll just say that when I hear co-workers talk about Big Ten Football, Iowa doesn't get mentioned (neither does Purdue)

to the 'world' Big Ten Football is Michigan, Ohio State and (shudder) Penn State

Iowa isn't mentioned

And neither is Wisconsin or Michigan State, but those are the two teams that played for the conference championship this year. Maybe your co-workers don't know what they're talking about, much like Notre Dame fans who still think they're a relevent national championship contender every year. And Michigan? Talk about a team that has been pedestrian.

As for why? Partly because of money, but also because DC at Iowa can be a spring board to a HC job at a much higher level conference than the MVC.

Agree on MSU and Wisc (MSU was completely :censored: :censored: by the officials in that game) not getting their due.

Agree on Michigan being pedestrian; their fans are slightly less annoying the nd fans, at least you can give Michigan props for being willing to play a conference schedule

What former DCs and OCs at Iowa are now HCs? I've heard 'rumblings' of a Fry Coaching Tree, never heard of a Ferentz Tree.

Couldn't care less if Spack stays or leaves; just think a move to Iowa would be a lateral at best. he can do whatever he chooses

I can't honestly see a true comparison between Purdue football and IU football, other than they are in the state of Indiana. Are you serious? IU finished 1-11 this year. Although Purdue was 6-6, they are still going to a bowl game. When was the last time IU was in a bowl game? How many consecutive bowl games has IU played in?
There are too many biased IU fans in the valley. Support the Sycamores!
