The Starter Level
I decided to wait until there were a few meaningful games from which to extract data. ISU helped out because it didn't even publish the +/- for the SMWC and IUPUI games and I have gotten too busy (or lazy) to do it the old fashioned way. Leaving out those two lopsided wins does give a clearer picture of who is playing and contributing in the competitive games.

So, here we go for the first four games for which data are provided:

Avila missing the Alabama game certainly affected his +/-. He has tracked the other high-minute players in the other three games.
Starting five is dominating the minutes with Bledson clearly first off the bench. Large drop to Wolfe and Miller after the top six.

Ongoing season totals omitting IUPUI and SMWC. Also, I didn't calculate Schertz in the first four games for some reason.

Avila did not play against Alabama where other starters went about -15 to -20 that game on +/-.
Swope on an incredibly strong 3-game run from -2 to +68. The same can be said for Kent moving from -2 to +47 in three games.

Miller leading non-starters in +/- at +29 in 67 minutes of playing time. For a guy branded by board gurus as a player who can't play defense and cannot make shots, he must be doing something right.

I puzzle over Daughtry's massive PER numbers when he has 7 minutes of playing time and is -3 in +/-????

Some have questioned Aaron Gray's contributions, but I notice he is +9 in 12.5 minutes of play. This is the highest +/- per minute of any player on the team.

Updated through the Evansville Game.
Jayson Kent is the only player with positive +/- in each of the last five games.
Competitive contest bench has consolidated to Wolfe, Bledson and Gray. Vorst has seen only two minutes of action in last 4 games. Miller only 5 minutes.

Strong start. Got stuck on 19 points for an extended time. UNI 0/10 from 3 in the first half was key to building a double-digit lead. Team Defense clamped Born very effectively in the first half but no one could guard him successfully in the second half.

Nearly perfect team defense was played in the first 10 minutes of the game

Just enough key baskets were made to stay 10+ ahead most of the way in the second half.

Remember: two blowouts from early in the season are not included in the +/- totals.

Kent scores 12 in the first half plus a single three late in the game.

Solid win in a tough environment.
Poor shooting in the first half at 36% overall and 28% from 3. Trailed 28-25 at break.

Foul trouble in the first half as Avila, Kent, and Bledson all picked up two fouls. Kent with 6 in the first half; Conwell with 8; Larry with 5

47 Second half points with Avila's 18 leading the way. Conwell with three 3's; Swope with 2 and Larry with 2 in the second half

In the second half, ISU effectively countered Murray's aggressive post-defense with numerous dump passes for layups.

Solid team defense throughout. Defense in the first half enabled staying close to Murray despite poor shooting
+9 rebounding margin
Only 9 free throws were shot by each team despite a very physical game.

Points per 4 minutes: The offense was really bogged down the last 8 minutes of the first half, but the defense held and Murray only outscored ISU by 4.
First Half: 7-5-7-4-2 =25
Second Half: 8-12-11-7-9 = 47

Bledson leads the way with +12 in 21.5 minutes; Avila has a rare negative =/- at -3.
Strong 3-minutes +7 by the group of Bledson, Swope, Gray, Miller & Kent.

Kent with another double-double: 14 points & 10 rebounds in 27.5 minutes. Only Tree in foul trouble with four.

Trailed 28-10 at the 12-minute mark of the first half; trailed 45-37 at halftime. Shot 46.4% FG in first half;50% in 2nd; 48.1% game
18/21 at FT line & 10/30 from 3

15 ISU TOs to 7 for Belmont. Julian Larry had a very bad stretch in the first half with three quick turnovers; finished the game with 3 Assists/3 TOs
ISU had six different players with 2 or 3 turnovers. Many of these were live ball turnovers as Belmont registered 11 steals.

Moved the record to 19-3. Purdue, with its OT win at home over Northwestern became the first team in the country to 20 wins at 20-2. Purdue had a 38 FT attempt advantage over the Wildcats in that game. Even the Big 10 Network showed several key plays where Northwestern players were fouled that were not called. I guess that is an earned homecourt advantage by years of success.

Saturday, UNC went on the road and lost to a 9-10 Georgia Tech Team. Barely lost ground in the polls. I wonder what would happen to a mid-major that lost at Georgia Tech???

73-71 win on the road at Missouri State. Swope makes a shot that was questionable given time & score to put ISU up 73-69.
43.8% FG; 30% from 3; 5/10 50% on FT's: tough day across the board. Missed front end of bonus several times near end of game.
Outrebounded 42-35
16 Assists/7 turnovers; Larry with 7 assists
A great credit to the team to win this game when so many things didn't go well
Coach's comment on the lower shooting percentage was that the team was generating good shots and taking good shots.

For MSU, Damien Mayo played 22 minutes; scored 11 points but was +9 in the +/-

After Jason's comments about Jonathan Mogbo, I stayed up to watch San Francisco the other night. He was a dominant force around the rim. Currently, he is averaging 15.4 ppg, 10.5 rb/g and 3.4 assists/game for the Dons who stand 20-6. He is shooting 67% from the field and 71+% from the line.

It does appear that ISU and Drake were the two Valley teams that didn't lose star quality talent to the transfer portal, but several teams have remained extremely competitive despite the losses.

Julian Larry had zero fouls drawn despite numerous hard drives to the basket. Interesting. Only ISU player with "+" in the game at +4.
Fouled out with a bit over 1 min 45 secs to play with ISU leading by 2. Two of his five fouls came after live ball turnovers left him defending fast break opportunities for the Salukis. ISU scored 2 points after he fouled out.

Avila with strong offensive game with 30 points, the rest of the team shot 32% from the field
Jake Wolfe with +/- = 0 in 26 minutes. Team Leading 7 rebounds; 2/2 FG & 1/1 from 3.

Xavier Johnson led the Salukis playing 40 minutes and scoring 21 points; Johnson scored 10 of his points during the 6:15 Larry was on the bench with foul trouble or after he fouled out.

Troy D'Amico also played 40 minutes for SIU scoring 15 with many coming on mid-range jumpers from the middle of the ISU zone.
Kennard Davis Jr scored 12 off the bench on 5/7 shooting and added 5 rebounds.

ISU shot 18 free throws to SIU's 14; outrebounded the Salukis 34 to 29 despite Kent not playing.
16 ISU turnovers versus 7 for SIU proved critical. Only 3 steals by ISU while giving up 10 steals.
ISU had 6 shots blocked to 2 for Salukis.
SIU scored 14 points off of turnovers to only 2 for the Trees.

ISU led for 31:45 of the game.

A struggle that was not resolved until the final 8 minutes in an 83-64 win over 6-21 Valpo. Valpo's offense was very effective for first 25-30 minutes of the game, but it suffered down the stretch.

Kent's return was extremely positive.

After Avila's 4th foul, Conwell's injury, and Swope's DNP due to injury, ISU had Wolfe, Larry, Bledson, Kent, and Daughtry on the floor at crunch time and went from up 3 to up 12-14. The coach admitted in the post-game show that he could never recall having that group practice together as a unit.

Bledson & Wolfe with strong games.

I wonder if coaches call Vorst for illegal screens in practice; he certainly has a bad habit of moving out into the defender which is obvious in the replay.

The teams with the worse records in the Valley do appear to be improving rapidly and the gap is not as large as in seasons past.
