I am so confused on when a coach can recruit and not recruit. My daughter is High Level Soccer Goalkeepr. She is an 8th grader soon to be a freshman. We have been receiving letters from P5 schools so far, Alabama North Carolina, Notre Dame, SMU to name a few and many mid level programs. These are being generated off here Club play at ID Showcases. But they are all worded "Due to your grade level we can not specifically contact you for recruitment, but we are asking you attend our ID camp as a preferred camper to gain interaction with you.

Then I just read where Ragland at Uof E just offered an 8th grade basketball player at Helfrich park middle school (Feeds into Evansville Reitz HS) here in Evansville a full scholarship as an 8th grader. SO a coach can offer a scholarship but not speak to them?

I gotta figure out the recruiting rules quick as we are starting to head into this full force it looks like. Can anyone direct me to resources on the process. I contacted NSCA recruiting and they wanted an Arm, a leg, and one nut to "represent her" in the recruiting process. love to hear some feedback!

Yes, a coach can offer a third grader a scholarship tomorrow if they want. However, it's just a verbal offer with zero legal binding. Back when Pete Carroll had USC rolling, he'd offer young QBs all the way down to early middle school. Basically, it's just a marketing ploy to get the hooks into them early and string them along in hopes they do develop. Then when they are juniors and seniors they've had a long standing "relationship" and can play the "I've believed in you since Day 1" card.

Official scholarship offers can only be made after September 1st (or thereabouts) of the kid's junior year. I think it depends on the sport but that was always the date I saw for basketball and football. Even then, however, it's still not legally-binding until that NLI makes it to the school on signing day.

Probably what is more important for you when you and your daughter start talking to schools is more about the scholarship mix they are offering. Soccer, if I recall correctly, is not a headcount sports which means they can offer partials. So they have like 14 scholarships to divvy out amongst all of the players. So if they have 28 players, for example, some of those girls are splitting things up. As you could imagine, the stars are likely getting full rides and then the girls at the end of the roster are likely those splitting the table scraps.

I don't know how good your daughter is, but if I could offer advice, she should go play at the a school that offers a full ride in whatever mix they have. Going into debt to play a sport is a terrible idea so if it means playing at a "lesser" school but coming out with zero debt, do it. Save potential debt load for an advanced degree. But yeah, I'd ask for an itemized offer letter on how they plan on getting your daughter to $0 as some will have their scholarship pool and then they will work with the school to find money elsewhere.

For example, several years back many of the out-of-state baseball players were Networks Scholars which was like $8-9k per year. So partial headcount sports have creative ways they can find money provided the athlete still meets the student part and can qualify for things. Hope this helps and good luck!

I don’t think they can call until so or jr year. When my daughter was a so we went to a basketball game and the coach took us to her office and offered.
The player can call and go visit anytime. Don’t know if age restrictions on that. NCAA has a book with all of the rules.

Congrats (tell her to be a Sycamore in my unbiased opinion)

Does the school provide a standard NLI form to the prospective player? Is there a time window to physically provide that letter?
If the letter must be provided to a student with a verbal commitment, but the school never provides the letter, what happens?

Does a student with a verbal offer actually have any standing until an official National Letter of Intent is in his/her hands to complete?

Already working on that. I contacted the coach to request ID camp information, hopefully he see some info on her prior. But i have already told her this would be a camp she needs to do. So in a few years everyone here needs to make their day of giving donations to the soccer program and start those NIL donations for the soccer team NOW! 😁
