Some Indiana high school basketball enthusiasts say that when Roger Harden took home Mr. Basketball honors over John Sherman Williams in 1982, it was the single biggest snub in Indiana High School basketball history. To this day, it's still hard to argue that point. Coached by Sycamore alum Basil Sfreddo during his time at Indianapolis Washington, Williams earned all-city, all-metro, all-sectional, all-regional and junior state honors at Indianapolis Washington and was on the Indiana All-Star team. He was, and still is, one of the most decorated high school players to ever lace them up for Indiana State.

Upon arriving on campus, Williams didn't stop what made him such a highly decorated prep player. As a freshman at State, he provided instant offense for the Sycamores averaging 18.6 points per game on 51.2% shooting. His play was so solid that he earned freshman All-American mention and Missouri Valley Conference honors despite the Sycamores finishing with a 9-19 record under Hall of Fame coach Dave Schellhase.

As a sophomore, Williams continued his scoring ways averaging 21.9 points per game on 52.1% shooting including a 47 point outburst in a 113-98 victory over West Texas State on March 3, 1984. But much like his freshman year, Williams was the lone gunman on a Sycamore squad that finished up 14-14 on the season. He was named to the Missouri Valley Conference second team for the second straight year. Over the next couple seasons, Williams played through a coaching change and on equally medicore Sycamore squads while putting in 22.8 points per game his junior season and 20.8 ppg his final year, earning Missouri Valley Conference first team honors both times.

Despite never playing on overly successful Sycamore squads, he scored 2,374 points to rank second behind Larry Bird on the all-time scoring list and finished up his Sycamore career with several impressive accolades. Williams was a four time All-MVC selection, twice being named to the first team. He as a three time All-American and currently ranks fourth on the MVC career scoring list. In Febuary of 2007, Williams received an even more impressive honor when he was named to the Missouri Valley Conference's All-Centennial Team along Larry Bird and Carl Nicks. Despite being one of the most highly regarded Sycamore basketball stars, Williams has not been enshrined into the Indiana State University Athletics Hall of Fame -- but it's only a matter of time... or should be.

What a lab for Hoosier HS hoop talent over the years...

Too bad that his ISU team didn't experience more success, which no doubt taints his personal achievments. Hopefully his induction into the ISU Hall of Fame will be expedited, thus ACTIVATING his ISU "ambassador" relationship to Indianapolis youth. :eek7:

Would make sense, wouldn't it. Hell, him coming in and teaching our kids how to shoot the rock would work just as well.
