So how bad did it end up?Shit game. Ugh.
1-1. A tie that feels like a bad loss. Gave up a crap goal late. Getting points at Missouri State will be a tough ask, but they don’t look unbeatable. So how bad did it end up?
In hindsight, I think maybe the play there was to stay back, but I am totally being a Monday morning quarterback. It was a fluke play and Maddie stops that 9 out of 10 times. There were a lot of things that went wrong there. My daughter should have won the ball at midfield, and three players got split allowing that girl to get the sliding toe poke resulting in the goal. I am going by memory as I refuse to watch it back so I may be way off. I trust Maddie’s judgement without question though. Tough situation.I don't pretend to understand any aspect of soccer strategy. So, I am asking a question about when a goal keeper should challenge an attacker by leaving the front of the goal and closing the gap. Does the correct action depend on the score and time remaining in the game?
Great learning question! You ask 5 keepers or keeper coaches this you will get 5 answers. I am a parent of a keeper, it has a lot to do with angles of the shot. If a keeper can come out and decrease the area of the goal available for a shot is probably the main factor as well as their trust in their backfield to recover and defend as they come out. They also factor can they disrupt momentum of the attacker. And then as a lot of keepers will tell you there are times they just want to take somebody out!I don't pretend to understand any aspect of soccer strategy. I watched the game on replay. Didn’t look like the same team we have been watching all year after the second goal.Good bounce back opportunity Thursday at home.
Hate to use the phrase a "must win game", but Thursday is a must win game against Drake. And Paul needs to do what he can to preserve legs knowing we have UNI on Sunday, and then the make up against UIC on Tuesday. The bench seems to be getting shorter and shorter in and bodies are going to break down. That can't continue.I watched the game on replay. They were very good. Fast to the ball, very technical, and physical. The first half was little bit of holding on for dear life and some solid play by the defense. As I mentioned before, Maddie was great in goal. I thought we played much better in the second half and had Drake on the back foot. Once we scored the second goal, we went with a very defensive lineup / formation and just absorbed pressure the rest of the game. We really didn’t even try to go forward and just defended which is hard to do for that long and against a team like Drake. Very solid win for the girls. Hopefully that gives them Some momentum to take to the next couple games. UNI and UIC are both playing well. That was an egregious mistake by Drake that led to the first goal. Of course, without an alert and aggressive response to the opportunity, nothing good would have resulted. It was a relaxed moment by Drake and in the blink of an eye, the Sycamores scored.
Drake looked to be a very solid team, but, remember, I don't have a clue what should be happening out there.
The only thing missing yesterday was that final pass and finish. Even with that being said, they still created some really good looks at goal. It was probably the best I have seen the girls connect their passes, play with patience, and build the attack in quite some time. Defense was on point, and we gave UNI all kinds of problems with our press. UIC will be tough, but I think we can get out of Chicago with 3 points tomorrow night. Let’s go Sycamores!!0-0 tie today vs UNI! Maddie did her job in goal, just couldn’t connect on the other end but had some great chances.
Well, we can still say we have a futbol team that’s undefeated at Memorial Stadium this year!
As I we watched yesterday on ESPN PlusI agree with everything you said. UNI is a physical team too. I hope the UIC game is on Plus. My daughter has a former teammate( Emmie Higgins) that starts in their midfield and her sister (Jilly) who plays with my daughter now is committed to play there next year. I am a huge fan of Paul Lawrence coaching and it gets better each game. The only thing missing yesterday was that final pass and finish. I don't think the game is live streamed tomorrow. I will try to provide some periodic updates here that may provide a bit more detail / color than what the official social media posts and "live stats" will provide. As I we watched yesterday on ESPN PlusI agree with everything you said.
