I took his comments at face value - admittedly not that well versed on his history at Michigan and how that went. Obviously, being a Colts fan pretty well versed on his professional career and you can dispute it all you want - that certainly is what sports is all about makes for good debate.
I think his point still stands - back then when shit got difficult and the going got tough. You didn’t have many options… sure you could transfer and sit out a year, but that didn’t have many guarantees. You had to just put your down, work and get better. It taught you a lot about yourself.
I don't think he was highly recruited to Michigan; regardless - he was RS'd as a FROSH, still DEEP on the depth chart, did NOT play better than Brian Griese or Scott Driesbach and platooned at times with Drew Henson.
He was drafted where he was drafted - given his college career, I don't recall him PLUMMETING down the rounds ala Dan Marino.
Titles... yes, he has 7 Super Bowl rings; he doesn't have the most TITLES. Lou "The Toe" Groza and Frank Gatski both have 8, some from the AAFC (original home of the Cleveland Browns, SF 49ers and the 'original' Baltimore Colts -- but as a Colts fan, you knew that factoid.)
Otto Graham ALSO has 7 titles as a QB, played for the title EVERY season he played pro football AND he won an NBA title as well (Graham was a 2x All-American in basketball at Northwestern) MVP of the Big Ten in football too... pretty sure, lil' Tommy Brady did NOT win a title in another sport.
Brady was also front/center of not one but TWO cheating scandals; regardless of his level of participation in VideoGate/TapeGate - he benefited.
Never a fan of Brady, never going to be a fan of Brady -- the CONTINUAL "Brady Rules" by the NFL lead me to NOT watch any game in which he's "analyzing"
The entire system is swirling around the drain; it was a bit before but NIL and the zero restrictions of continual/endless movement just put it on warp speed
