WANTED: Passionate Sycamore Fanatics. That You?

Since everyone seems to be mad about the latest assessments, maybe the county should reduce the rate. I believe the law is that residential real estate tax is capped at 1% of market value. It could be lower. I think it was. Vigo county doesn't need 40-50% more money than they were getting 3 years ago. The surrounding counties evidently don't.

Everyone isn’t mad. I’m not mad. So that’s not everyone.

FYI, we won't know until December if or how much our actual property taxes will go up. I can tell you it won't be 40 or 50% Just because your assessment went up that much, doesn't mean your actual taxes will go up that much. I recommend you go to Holding Vigo County Accountable podcast and watch the interview Steve Ellis did with the Assessor. He will walk everyone through the process, with actual facts.

I know what they are. Taxes are calculated off assessments.

Exactly and the recent assessments will drive a bill due in ~12-18 months; start saving now.

And if you wish, start fighting the assessment NOW as well; you may win your fight

Pretty sure they don't need to raise property taxes that much. If they do then they are terrible stewards of the people's money and property.

Oh and if you think county, state property taxes are bad now; wait until the DOGE crowd at the national level is finished "finding efficiencies" and see what states (of many colors) will be forced to enact to maintain certain levels of services, etc.

The old politicians are all a bunch of crooks philosophy, love it. I just love it when these kinds of generalizations get thrown out. I'm a normal everyday guy that left a successful business to try to help the community that I've lived in all my life, and took a big pay cut to boot. But yes, I'm a crooked politician just lining my pockets. Have you ever met or talked to me or the Assessor? If not, feel free to stop in anytime and we can have a chat. None of us like the thought of our property taxes going up ( my assessed value went up $87,000). But the Assessor is following State law in his assessment procedure. You will never believe me or him because you don't know what you don't know. There's an old saying about walking a mile in someone else's shoes. You might want to try that before making these kinds of statements. All we hear is that we need new blood and everyday people in politics. Then when somebody like me gets in there, we're not only criticized, but harassed, intimidated and threatened with violence, because people don't like the decisions we make on issues we work on eery day. Mm

Hopefully you don't take this the wrong way, but if I had a dollar for everytime a politician says something along the lines of "I'm a normal guy like you" or "I'm a businessman, not a politician", I'd be loaded. Not really interested in the woe is me stuff. While harassment, intimidation, and threats are certainly crossing the line; criticizing officials is a constitutional right in this country. If you're in there for the right reasons then I'm glad, but far too many people aren't. If a majority were in there for the right reasons then almost every office would have term limits, but instead we end up with mayors, representatives, and senators that are in office for decade after decade.

I watched the podcast video on FB with Ellis and Gardner that you referenced. After watching I can't really see a scenario where property taxes don't go up ($, not %). It seems like the county and the city both are blowing millions (or want to blow millions) on something every time I turn around and someone has to pay for it. Sure there are state and federal grants out there, but they're not going to get a grant for everything. Dropping the tax rate a little bit, while still getting more money in the end would definitely be the easy way out.

Like most on this forum, usually life is busy and don't closely follow local politics. The little I do know about Meistro I respect. Really appreciated his advocacy following ISU's failed leadership after choosing not to host the super regionals. Not fair to clump him with "all politicians."

Concerning property assessment, mine increased also, but the assessed value is below what I could sell it for. Don't like the increase, but can't honestly complain.

If you don’t know Meistro, I would recommend taking up his offer and going to meet with him at his office and discuss your concerns with government directly. You may find that he is a respectable human being that does want to make Terre Haute better.

If you don’t take his offer, don’t post another thing bashing local government.

It’s a cheap shot, it’s uncalled for and it’s ignorant.

96 knows that a member of this forum is in politics in the very thread he’s taking time out of his day to address questions he decides he’s going to take a shot at all politicians in general - because he’s upset about the assessments. Give me a break. You couldn’t come off sounding more deranged and just have a bunch of cliche statements ready to just vomit the second you get the chance.

It’s basically Facebook comments section meets SycamorePride and it’s BS. Like, it’s fair to be upset and have questions about property assessments and taxes - for sure. But to just spew a bunch of nonsense as a result of that shows a complete lack of education and competence.

Grouping issues that you’re just angry at the world against like “term limits” by the way we agree and “they’re just doing this to fund the high schools people already voted against” if you’re mad at the world and unwilling to listen and learn and engage in meaningful conversations take it to Facebook with those heathens or another platform this isn’t the place. You have a county commissioner coming on here discussing with you and inviting you to have a sit down conversation and you couldn’t be more disrespectful.

If I had a dollar… STFU bro. If you had a dollar for all the times you heard that you wouldn’t be on here losing your mind about some dumb ass assessments. You don’t even make sense, kick rocks.

Do you really trust local, state, or federal government / politicians as a whole? I sure don't. My guess is that Meistro is in fact probably one of the few good guys serving right now, and I certainly didn't mean to be disrespectful towards him. I'm just wearing my emotions on my sleeves and being 100% truthful in what I believe. Apparently he's upset that I referred to most politicians as crooked liars, but politicians as a whole have done more than enough to earn that label, and that unfortunately includes those in Terre Haute.

Thanks for the info. I looked it up and the only place I could find it was Facebook. I'm not Facebook guy so I guess I'm out of luck on this one. I do hope as you suggested that the taxes won't go up as much as it appears they could.

And you expect us to trust your "perspective"?

Perhaps you should do the actual research and educate yourself on the topic vice running on emotions based on "beliefs"
