Coach's quote to accompany video in last post

Here is a quote ascribed to one of her coaches. It is not clear if it was Coach Gartland, Coach Martin or Coach McNichols.

"Since the end of the indoor season Kylie Hutson has battled a hamstring and quad injury. She has practiced on a very limited bases and took three weeks off from competition. She vaulted at the Drake Relays and did very well finishing behind two Olympians. The following week she jumped an outdoor season best in the rain at her last home track meet of her Indiana State career. Last night she jumped very well at the Billy Hayes Invitational at IU. She jumped three season bests, 4.36, 4,42, and 4.51. She took the bar up to the collegiate record 4.61 and had two fairly good attempts, on the last attempt the pole broke and Kylie cut her bottom hand very deep. The IU medical staff took great care of her and went to the ER and received stitches both on the inside and the outside of her hand. At this point until the hand can be examined further this coming week, she will remain questionable for the rest of the season. She will be seeing one of the best hand surgeons in the US Monday morning in Indianapolis."

It is my understanding that deep cuts like this can occur as a result of the sudden release of energy stored in the pole. Perhaps some vaulters out there can elaborate.

I keep checking the ncaa.com site, but they haven't updated th track portion yet. The headline is still Chelenga's collegiate 10k record, I'd suspect they will have something on there tomorrow about Kylie's new pole vault record.

that is some photo by the way, looked bad

man, she looks like she's in some serious pain there, why do bad things keep happening to good people like this??

Sage - reason you are seeing a lack of publicity is because she didn't actually break the record. The attempt that the poll broke on was an attempt at the NCAA record.

Thus the reason that you are not seeing much on it - their were false reports that she broke the record. They were just that, false reports!

why then, is the ISU site reporting she broke the outdoor women's pole vault record??

"Indiana State senior Kylie Hutson broke the outdoor collegiate record in the women’s pole vault when she cleared 14’-9.5” (4.51 meters) on her second attempt during Friday’s competition."

Morgan, the record she was going for when her pole broke was the all time indoor/outdoor record. The highest vault ever recorded by a female collegiate athlete was indoors. Kylie was hoping to beat that record.

This is the impression I get.

Track & Field News Records Agree with Morgan

I think Morgan may be right on this one. According to Track & Field News, the women's collegiate outdoor pole vault record is 4.60 (15 feet, 1 inch), set by Chelsea Johnson in Eugene, Oregon, on May 14, 2006. According to the same source, the collegiate indoor pole vault record in 14 feet, 10 1/4 inches. set by Amy Linnen of Arizona on March 9, 2002.

See: http://www.trackandfieldnews.com/records/

It seems that the press release from the ISU sports information office was erroneous. Of course, I would be pleased if someone could prove that statement to be incorrect.

thanks for finding that, ISU obviously needs to make that correction then.

I appreciate the vote of confidence - "may be right one this one" and all. I talk with the coaches at ISU on a weekly basis and my sister runs at State - it was a false report and I two was lead to believe that she broke the record - that was before I talked to a coach at Indiana State who said that was incorrect information and they were not sure where they got that information.

It's kind of like questioning me when posting about Gartland stepping down, just because Gosycamores either hasn't reported something or does report something doesn't necessarily mean it's true.

But thanks for looking that up for us Sage, seriously... I mean if she did indeed break the record (she didn't) but I am sure they would find a way for it to fly totally under the radar. lol

I wasn't questioning you--I was looking for verification. I'm also well aware that SI sometimes gets is wrong. Get over yourself.

ahah I was really just kind of messing around - sorry if you were offended... Really wasn't trying to do that - just messing around, more of a cut on gosycamores than anything else. But wasn't really serious - consider myself, over myself.

For now....

I read about all of this on Facebook. If the SID was that misinformed, we have a problem here. I will have to do some follow up research but this kind of stuff should not happen at D1, PERIOD! I have not read all the comments so maybe I am missing something but this is a pretty strange story, if you ask me~
