Gotta Hav

The Wade Level
Does anyone else find it hard to comprehend that the Horizon League, is THE best Non-BCS Basketball Conference in the country?

Sounds weird, right?

Does anyone know how close the MVC is to the Horizon League in NCAA basketball accomplishments, or our current Non-BCS Rankings as a conference? We have to be close to being the 2nd best Non-BCS Conference, don't we?

I know this is all hinges on not how many teams the MVC gets into the NCAA tournament, but more with what they do when they get there. How many first round games has Creigton won with all of their recent appearances versus Butler appearances, or versus Milwaukee's, or better yet...versus Cleveland State? We all know about Butler's success, but Milwaukee and CSU have also won first round games in recent years.

Damn Horizon League, stop outshowing our beloved MVC!

if you're basing this assumption only on recent success in the NCAA tournament then you may be correct, but if you think from top to bottom the Horizon is better than the MVC then I think you're incorrect.

if there were an MVC-Horizon challenge per se, the MVC would win every year. I don't even think it would be close.

The MVC's conference RPI is always better than the Horizon league, not that that matters to the NCAA though.

Good points, however..I was not really talking about RPI, Head-to-Head matchups, ratings, rankings, what ifs, etc....I was just singurlarly focused on the Horizons success in the NCAA tournament.

And agree, our RPI is always better.....not that any of that matters to the NCAA selection committee knuckleheads...

Where's this claim originating?

With the exception of some horizon league fans (coaches, administrators) -- who thinks the Horizon is better?

Ha !

Anyone who thinks the H-League is better than the MVC is outta of their mind (and still rolling in the glory of the Butler run last spring). Having said that the MVC and notably Creighton has often been notorious for getting into big games in the NCAA or NIT -- playing great ...........then losing. Note the Blue Jays lose to Kentucky in the NIT or Drake's amazing defeat by the Western kentucky in the NCAA.
I know the winners in those games are good teams, but the key to national recognition is NOT playing well -- its winning. Northern Iowa did not just play well, they won. Bradley and WSU WON to both get to the Sweet 16 a few years ago.
Hey -- if the H-League wants to go head to head with the MVC bring it on !

...H-League wants to go head to head with the MVC bring it on !

League-wise -- I don't think the MoValley could stand the RPI ding it would take (especially now that RPI is part of the formula for final conference standings...

I would like to see the Trees renew the annual game with Valpo AND Butler (if Buttler would be brave enough to face the Trees!)

Sounds like a troll post to me.

I have never heard ANYONE say that the Horizon League is better than the MVC.... NEVER. In fact, when it is suggested that ISU or E-Ville drop out of the MVC, the Horizon is usually brought up... and no-one wants that.

What success are you talking about? One team making it to the championship while no other teams from that conference even made the tournament does not equate to the Horizon having a lot of success in the tournament.

There... fixed it for you.

Ditto!!!

I never said the Horizon League was better top to bottom....re-read my posts.

In head-to-head, team-to-team action between our leagues, the MVC would reign supreme....

My only focus was their NCAA success and it wasn't just Butler's run last year.

The Horizon is 12-7 in the tournament in the last six years, and some Horizon team has won a first round game in 10 of the last 13 years.

Just curious, how many of those wins came from BUTLER? Take them out of those numbers and I don't think they will have that much success. The MVC looked pretty damned good in 79 too. ONE finals run skews the figures.

Q. Just curious, how many of those wins came from BUTLER?
A. The thread is about conference....

and yes, the MVC looked good in 79...but comparing conference to conference, is what topic du jour is.

And if you would re-read what I've previously posted, it addresses all of the Horizons success and there was no mention of one run. Did you read that they've won a first round game 10 of the last 13 years?

The Horizon has also had a Sweet 16 team in three of the last five NCAA tournaments. If that was Butler, who cares. I'm talking conference success...and if we want to go down that path, Milwaukee advanced to the Sweet 16 also a few years ago...

My hope is that ISU's success, is also success for the MVC.....and our success out paces and out surpasses those twerp ass schools in the Horizon.

But if the conference wins came 90% from BUTLER, that is a valid question. I wasn't trying to chastise you at all, just the logic of the idiots that would call the Horizon the BEST non-BCS conference. Last I looked, I basically agreed with you. Horizon hasn't exceeded the MVC in the last decade in sweet sixteens, period.

Horizon vs MVC....team for team, no question, the Val wins. Not too sure where the hostility came from but the facts speak for themselves. Nuff said~

How long does your knowledge of the MVC go back?

Compare the NCAA success rates for MVC Teams vs Horizon Teams since 1998... Give 1 point for making the tourney, 2 points for 1st round win, 3 points for 2nd round win, etc... Finally, grant 1 point for each DIFFERENT program that has made it to the tourney...

To answer the question, I think the A-10 is consistently a better conference than the MVC. The Mountain West and the MVC are close which is why the challenge is such a good one IMO. I'd give a slight edge to the MWC though if forced to choose...I may be a bit biased being a Wyoming grad though.
