Wow, sleepy offensive performances for two days in a row by ISU and Nebraska-Omaha. ISU's first two runs came on a homer by Jeremy Lucas in the 5th. Lucas drove in Landon Curry who go on base after being hit by pitch. With score tied at 2-2 going into the bottom of the ninth...Jeff Miera leads off with a double! Wampler walked. Curry up with runners on first and second with no outs. Curry bunts the runners over to second and third. On Curry's bunt, the UNO pitcher makes an errant throw to third and Miera scores! ISU wins 3-2! Overall, ISU got eight hits, two walks and three were hit by pitches. They were K'd five times.

Sean Manaea had another sharp outing, going seven innings, giving up one run on two hits. He had 8 strikeouts and walked two. The single run came in the fourth when he gave up both hits! Chris Machado, who we've not seen for a couple of weeks came on in the eighth for a 1-2-3 inning. Devin Moore came on in the ninth for the save...and gave up a single and a double to tie the score at 2-2! The blown save means Manaea doesn't get a decision, much like Bacus' day yesterday. Moore gets the win after Miera scores an unearned run in bottom of ninth.

Sycamores living on the edge...................don't like that!

GO SYCAMORES!

I was going to use the same phrase, "living on the edge." And this is not Missouri State...it is a struggling Nebraska-Omaha team that we should be whomping on! As they say...a win is a win. But ISU has three straight weekends of the toughest opponents in the league coming their way. They have go to be ready. Pitching (as I've been saying for a few weeks) is carrying this team. We have the best starters in years...but we need balance with a strong hitting attack.

a win is a win as they say, gotta finish off the series with a win tomorrow too, then prepare for a dangerous WSU team next weekend.

SIU is now winning at MSU 7-2, so a win by SIU will give MSU 4 losses, same as ISU.

Meanwhile, Dallas Baptist (who we beat 2 of 3 last weekend) has lost the first two games this weekend at Wichita State. They lost last night 13-3 and today 8-7 on a walk-off by Wichita State in the bottom of the ninth. Not sure what to read into this. Is Wichita State coming on strong in the waning weeks of the season or is DBU slumping? Before the Indiana State series, DBU had won 8 straight series.

and SIU won over MSU, so now we have a 3 way battle for first.

ISU has 3 series left, vs. WSU, at SIU, then vs. MSU.

So we're gonna find out real fast how good ISU really is.

3 MVC teams in the RPI top 50 now as WSU passes WSU with their win today.

Here's tonight's report from WTHI which includes game footage and interviews with jeremy Lucas and Coach Heller:

I found it interesting that Lucas admitted to "preparing to the jersey," meaning that they let up in their preparation mentally for this series and he says he doesn't want to see games like this again this season.

Sometimes a coach may be responsible for this attitude; sometimes it seems that a coach can't prevent it. This is time for the players to take charge of their performance and play every game like it's Wichita. Let's go Sycamores!

Here's a story from Sunday's TribStar featuring player interviews:

Heller commented on the pitching carrying the team:

Heller was philosophical about ISU’s hitting slump.

“It’s hard to get the pitching and hitting to come together. In all of the years I’ve done this, its been so few times when everything was clicking — hammering the ball and getting the pitching — it just seems like it never happens as much as you want it to. We’re in one of those stretches right now,” Heller said.

I don't doubt the accuracy of that statement. But it's not a great endorsement of his one coaching abilities.
