Sycamore Proud

The Nicks Level
It was noted some time ago that the position to direct band(s) was open. It has also been noted that the conflict between the "music dapartment" band staff is out of hand, and the band people are thought of as beneath the level of the music people. Does anyone know where this stands since the students are back and it is just days before the first event? If this has been explained before and I just missed it, please give a link that I can use to check it out.

New director has been hired, band camp has started and finished. I've spoken to a few students who seem to like the new guy, spoken to a few directors that know him and he's known to be...well, pompous and self-absorbed.

At the end of the day, it's a 1 year contract. I'm sure there will be an option for more years at the end of the contract, but it was set up this time as a 1 year. We'll see how he does, I won't pass final judgment until halfway through the season, both for Marching Band and Basketball Band.

Ultimately, my concern remains the same. Professors in the School of Music who continue to look down their nose at the Athletic Bands and prevent them from being advertisements for our school. It's a systemic issue that is often present in higher level music instruction that holds the philosophy that athletic bands do not play "real music." Sometimes, that concern can be well founded, often it's not. Put a quality band director in front of an ensemble and, choose quality music, and watch what's possible. I'd like to reiterate it isn't all of the professors, but a very large number of them.

It's frustrating to watch it happen, especially after having been in the ensemble under a great teacher and having been there when the new director of bands (Roby George) was hired and what happened the very same semester he started. There's a correlation here. I hope the university wakes up in time to fix it before the damage is irreparable.

Thanks LNP. It's always nice to hear from someone who is knowledgeable of the situation and who is willing to share their observations.

Is there a Dept of Music dean that we can write to and send our concerns. We gotta restore the marching band to its days of glory!

Good luck. I ran it up the flag pole a couple of years ago and got treated like I had lobsters crawling out if my ears. I hope you have more luck because the bands are a HUGE marketing opportunity for the school that, right now, they are screwing up BADLY.

I was lucky enough to march in the 70's under the leadership of ISU's greatest marching band instructor, Gary Smith. We marched over 200 instruments and routinely received standing ovations from the home crowd. (I also might add we received standing o's at a Bengals - Cowboys game and at Ball State's Homecoming Game in Muncie in 1976.)
The ISU marching band was recognized as one of the best in the midwest if not the country. We actually were invited to an International Band Contest in Switzerland to represent the USA after being noticed at the Bengals game..however, that never materialized because the University of Illinois hired Smith away from Terre Haute.
The band performed at other venues.. I remember marching in the Little Italy Festival. We put on half time shows at Sullivan and Brazil. We were a great source of pride to ISU back in the day.
I relay this information to let people know a great band is a great ambassador for a university. I am not aware of any problems that is spoken about here, but it sounds like ISU needs to get its act together.
The only complaint I have with the present marching band is that its selection of songs and routines reminds me of the high school bands of today. I understand there are future high school band directors marching so I guess someone thinks that is the direction the band should go. But, again, that is just personal preference and I can overlook that.

The School of Music has a new Director, Dr. Paul Bro. He took over officially last year and has been doing good work thus far. Dr. Nancy Cobb-Lippens was the person here previously.

If you want to make your voice heard, contact Dr. Bro.

I sent Dr. Bro an e-mail yesterday and am awaiting his reply. Stay tuned.

The band is headed in the right direction. I was very impressed with the sound today - lots of BRASS! I hope we keep this director - he's good. From what i hear, he has worked with the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps, which will pay dividends for our program. I would like to have seen the halftime show today, but with what I saw, I can't wait to see them in two weeks!

This is most encouraging! I wish I could have been there today, but such is life. I was able to watch the Ustream today and the band did sound good on that feed.

I stopped to talk to some band members to thank them for their best sound I had heard in a decade or more. He told me they had 120+ instruments (compared to around 80 last year. It truly showed as a 33% increase in musicians in ONE year has to make a difference. The Marching SYC's are the largest in 11 years. Nice job to those in charge.

Here's a taste of the tailgaiting walk for the "new" band that I posted on Facebook, which now escorts the teams to their locker room. Pretty cool.

I also was impressed with the Marching Sycamores yesterday. I also liked having the new Forest members run onto the field preceding the players.

Looks like the "Pride of Indiana" is on the comeback trail. Liked to hear of the new activates of The Forest too. Better band + more student involvement + a very good product on the field = A great time to be a TREE!!!

My contact within the SOM says there have been a couple very talented individuals hired lately... One looks like Robert Downey, Jr. and the other is from the Great Lakes area (very talented with strings). Not only should the Pride of Indiana get better (as they have been last couple years IMHO), but the School of Music performances should improve. I would say that not only is the Pride of Indiana (marching band) a marketing piece but the SOM is too. They just have to be utilized.

I missed the halftime show last week because my band teacher wife wanted to watch them but also wanted a Diet Coke. Yes Diet Coke. You may or may not know that the concession stand doesn't sell Coke products so I had to smuggle a can in from the vehicle. I felt so dirty doing that. Then getting popcorn for the girls took so long I missed the entire first drive of the 3rd qtr and the best play we had to that point.

The band sounded good from outside and I don't remember what they played except it was from the 80s and was cool they were playing it.
