It's the final pre-season game before before Friday's conference opener against Bradley at Bob Warn Field...as Ball State comes to town today for a 6:00 p.m. contest.

Ball State enters Wednesday's series with a 6-19 record on the season, including a 4-2 mark in the Mid-American Conference. The Cardinals have picked up a pair of 2-1 series wins in conference play, topping Ohio at home and Miami (Ohio) on the road. ISU and BSU have played one common opponent, the Indiana Hoosiers -- the Hoosiers came away with road victories in both games, topping ISU, 6-4, on March 9 and BSU, 10-2, on March 23.

Ball State enters Wednesday's game with a 6-19 overall record but have won four out of its last seven games since opening Mid-American Conference play ... The Cardinals have scored 107 runs (4.28 runs/game) this season and is batting .238 as a team ... On the mound, the Cardinals own a 6.03 team ERA and opponents are batting .298.

Ball State will use multiple pitchers Wednesday in its only midweek contest but will send freshman left-hander Nestor Bautista to the hill to start ... Indiana State will counter with right-hander Jason Van Skike.

Bautista will be making his eighth appearance and third start of the year Wednesday ... He has an 0-3 record with a 9.18 ERA in 16.2 innings of work as he has struck out 12 and walked 10 batters ... He got the loss in relief Saturday afternoon as he allowed three runs on three hits in 2.1 innings of work at Miami.

Van Skike will be making his seventh start of the season for the Sycamores ... He has a 2-1 record with a 3.31 ERA in 35.1 innings of work ... He has struck out 24 batters while walking 18 ... He last pitched 4.0 innings against Rockhurst (March 31) and allowed two runs on nine hits.

Junior second baseman Mitch Widau leads the Cardinals team with a .309 batting average ... Widau is second on the team with 25 hits and 14 RBI while tied for second with five doubles ... Sophomore Blake Beemer is second on the team with a .269 batting average and has posted 21 hits ... Junior Cody Elliott leads the team with 27 hits and 17 RBI.

In the bullpen, left-hander Jon Cisna has a 1.15 ERA in 15.2 innings of work while fellow lefty Devin Wilburn has a 5.40 ERA in 15.0 innings of work ... Wilburn also has one of the Cardinals' two saves on the year ... Right-hander Scott Brothers Jr. posted his first career save Sunday at Miami and he has a 6.57 ERA in 12.1 innings.

Weatherwise, a nice day in The Haute. Look for a gametime temperature of 65-degrees with a strong southwest wind of 15-25 mph blowing out to left-center field!

Today's contest can be heard at WISU online, on SycamoreVision, through Twitter and though live stats service.

Weather is warm at gametime--68-degrees! BUT the wind is blowing from the southwest at 15-25 mph with gusts to 35! Home run weather as wind is blowing out to left-center!! Keep the ball down Van Skike!

Lucas is starting again at catcher...but Ferguson is not in the line-up. Hope he didn't aggrevate his shoulder problem.

Another surprise is that Owen Conway is starting in right.

Sycamores win 5-3.

Sycamores had five runs on 10 hits and two walks with no ISU errors. ISU's record improves to 17-10. Last season, the league play started earlier, so the 2010 w-l record going into the season was 13-5. ISU used five pitchers. Hochstedler gets win (?). Drake gets save.

Cardinals had three runs on eight hits and one walk and Ball State gave up one error. Ball State used nine pitchers. Cardinals record goes to 6-20.

Game time about 2 hours, 22 minutes

This year's schedule allowed for more pre-conference games, which turned out to be a plus. Last year, the Sycamores played just 18 pre-conference games and were 13-5 going into the season. This year, they are 17-10...but its been that past eleven games that have really tuned the Sycamores up for the conference schedule. When all of the pistons are firing right, I believe this year's squad could be as good as last year's. Conference play will be the acid test. Bradley is a very good team this season compared to last (they beat us twice in a down period last year). Colin Rea will take to the mound at 7:00 p.m. this Friday night against the Braves ace lefty.
