The Sycamore Level
The kids are turning in uniforms and other equipment and the coach is meeting with players officially marking the closing day of the baseball campaign. Although I would love to be a fly on the wall, I'm sure his analysis of the future of the team is about the same--to the extent of our knowledge--as those of us on this forum. "Do more of what we did well and do less of what we didn't do well." We have a few bats to replace, but the biggest hurdle is in the pitching department, where I can't see that anyone has a guaranteed role. We need new arms and we need the arms we have to move to the next level. It seems to me that the "clay" is good and it just has to be molded and fired in just right manner to get the perfect form! I firmly believe this the young men in the pen that are coming back will show marked improvement. As most were new to the program this year, they now know what is expected of them and they have tasted success in a big way and also the agony of defeat. If the season ending on such a sour note didn't bother them, I'd worry. But I don't think that's the case. It was a major disappointment.

Congratulations again to Coach Meggs, his assistants and to an awesome group of young men. Off season recuiting to fill in a few more slots should go well with ISU's great season, the coach being coach of the year and the new stadium.

Dell headed home

Well, talked with Dell today and he had his one on one with Coach today. Pleased to announce that Coach has asked him back for next year. Dell needs to come home and work on his secondary pitches to be able to secure a starter position for next season. He sounds hungry to make this jump and we are hoping that the Minnetonka Millers was the right choice by him. We will see.

I can say that Cordell roomed with Harlan and Ferrell these past few days and no one was okay with how the season ended. Sounded like the boys were already talking about that next year would bring tougher competition as well as higher expectations - And they are going home to prepare for that.

I'm excited to see what next year (and future years) have in store for the Trees Baseball program. I think EVERYONE learned alot during this season (including the tournament).

Coach Meggs seems to believe in Cordell, based upon the mid-week starts and relief work in key games toward the end of the season. Let's hope he can move to the next level between now and February 2010.
