might as well get this started, it's MVC week for Cross Country, the ISU men are defending champions and should be picked to win again or be 2nd to Southern Illinois. I suspect the pre-meet poll will be out Tuesday afternoon. The women finished 4th last year and will hopefully be top 5 again this year.

Indiana State has won 4 of the past 6 MVC championships, SIU won the other 2.

The meet is in Wichita this year. right now the weather forecast looks ok

I think for the men it's gonna come down to who has the best #4 and #5 runners between ISU and SIU. Hopefully it'll be ISU. Like I'd previously mentioned this should be more or less a dual meet between ISU and SIU with the Illinois State kid in the top 5 as well. SIU's Dunbar has the best time over 8k this season so far.

These spots have been getting better, but I think there's still a breakout performance to be seen from them. Let's hope they're peaking right about now so they can close the gap between themselves and Padgett, Disher and Escalera. It would be nice to head into the district meet with an MVC title under their belt! :sycamores:

Was that the year when there was a jackal on the course and I found 6-packs of Coors Extra Gold for $1.99?

It was '87 XC. Remember, we left on Thursday? It was dark by the time we got to Wichita. We ran in a random subdivision, and there were dogs running loose. Using my animal expertise, I determined that they must be jackals. After all, no rational person would let his dog run loose.

Don't remember the Coors for $1.99, though. What's the story?

I presume you're talking about the 1987 MVC track meet? Man, that was one dreadful meet for me, an AWFUL way to end my ISU career. I remember it being so hot out there.

Yeah, Wichita hosted in the spring of '87. It was hot. I can't remember another meet where they were spraying runners down during the race. Ran a sad 5K in the middle of a miserable afternoon.

I don't remember runnnig in the sub-division; I only recall the jackal comment.

I can't believe you don't remember the Coors Extra Gold, especially since I stuffed a 12-pack in your bag to transport it back to TH. A few of us walked to a liquor store and they were selling it for $1.99 a sixer; I bought a case. It was a big deal because you couldn't buy Coors products in Indiana at the time.

I think it was also the meet when, in the morning, John H. came round to all our rooms and ominously pronounced, "It's time."

My enduring memory of that meet was that the steeple was short a barrier on the first lap. I got 5th and scored a couple points, but Larry Judge thought we should ask to run the race again with the proper number of barriers to see if I could place higher. In retrospect it wasn't a bad idea but at the time I was thinking, "WTF does a thrower know about distance running?"

I also remember pushing that bald Illinois State runner (Schaeffer?) in the back because he kept slowing down before each water jump. We were about three laps in and he started cussing me out. Good times...

Sorry, I have no recollection of transporting Coors across state lines--and that's the truth!

"It's time" was '86 at Illinois State. Jungle John had struggled all year, then he makes his pronouncement. I thought, "he's gone around the bend". Then he proceeded to bust one. So much for my expertise, huh?

Well....I stand corrected on both counts. But the former is a mystery I'm going to have to solve.

Schaefer was a nut job. Coughlin kicked him off the team when he was running really fast...close to 4:00 for the mile.

I remember him screaming at me after the indoor MVC meet, because he didn't like how I was surging when he tried to pass me. Of course, he eventually crushed me, but Pettigrew won the race. What a kook!

those ILS and SIU runners were pretty good in the mid 80s, they dominated like ISU is dominating now.

And I had graduated in 87, so didn't run the MVC CC meet in the Fall of '87

ISUCC, I am sure you will keep us informed on the MVC meet but I wanted to say--best of luck to our CC men and women. Make us proud! We appreciate you (and MORGAN) keeping us full of the inside CC info~

Well, I guess i can cross you off the list of people who might have helped me smuggle the Coors. :D

Maybe it was the E-man...

Cross "E" off the list, he redshirted that fall. His injury really hurt the '87 version of the team, but I'm sure the '88 team appreciated his presence.
