Bought the book on Amazon & got it this week. Almost 400 pages so I have only skimmed thru it but it is well done & informative.

Met him when I worked at The Sporting News - he was friends with one of the sports editors

Well before my time but the playing resume was excellent in High School and College. He was coach during the first couple years I was at ISU and it was clear the man could recruit and coached an exciting brand of offensive basketball. Those teams were just never ever able to put all the pieces together and compete in what was arguably a peak in the MO Val from a talent standpoint.

any thoughts on how much his drinking affected his coaching? thinking that's why he was pushed out of the job

There were rumors and heard them early on too. Just never anything any of us could substantiate. Will be interesting to see if the rumors of and/or drinking is addressed in the book.

He absolutely addresses it:

From the Amazon page for the book:

Dave Schellhase (with author Tom Speaker) relates his journey through a life of athletics, a journey filled with highs and lows that were covered extensively in the sports media throughout the nation. Dave is a Hall of Fame player both at Purdue and in Indiana High School. He is also a Hall of Fame college coach.

Dave’s three goals in writing this book are to help young basketball players learn the skills which will make them the best that they can be. HOW TO PLAY. Secondly, Dave wants to share his ideas on coaching with those who want a coaching career. HOW TO COACH. Finally, Dave takes the reader through his journey of recovery from alcoholism. Dave relates what he’s learned about the disease. HOW TO STAY SOBER.

It was generally believed he had a drinking problem in his three years at STATE. Here's hoping he's doing well and has conquered alcoholism.

Amazon gives you the ability to read snippets online... he absolutely address that disease during his ISU tenure, that B. Cooper was working with him on treatment options.

Some say that disease is never conquered but rather a daily, weekly fight for the rest of their lives
