It was a pitcher's duel until a miscommunication by the ISU outfield in the sixth led to a double putting runners at second and third with no outs. Ultimately, DBU picked up two runs to make the score 3-1.

Dakota Bacus pitched seven innings, giving ISU the quality start they needed. He left the games having given up nine hits and one walk with one hit batter. He had seven strikeouts. Kurt Kudrecki came on in the eighth with the score 3-2 in favor of DBU. After striking out one and then giving up two singles, Reggie Hochstedler came on with one out. Hochstedler struck out his first batter swinging for out number two. The next batter took the first pitch he saw and drove it up the middle for DBU's fourth run. A ball dropped in front of Burnam and took the score to 5-2. A two-out triple plates two more runs to make the score 7-2. Another triple score runs number eight. Four of the five runs after two were out. Dorsett on to pitch to try to get the final out in the eighth and he forces a groundout to the first batter he faced. 8-2 going to the bottom of the eighth. Fehringer comes on to pitch the ninth and walks his first two batters. Sac bunt moves runners to second and third. That's followed by his third walk of the inning. Two more runs score on a first-pitch double. Now 10-2. Still runners at second and third with one out. Sooooo, Brandon Flora comes on to pitch!!! He hits his first batter. He hits his second batter to drive in still another run! A sac fly drives in run number 12. Then Flora hits his THIRD batter. Next batter singles to drive in two more. Now 15-2. Next batter walks. Finally a fly out to center to end the half inning. DBU had 15 runs (all earned) on 18 hits with four walks and four hit batters.

Offensively, ISU had a chance to tie in the sixth with runners on second and third, but a great diving stab at second base off the bat of McCurdy with runners on second and third ended the sixth. Then in the seventh, a single by Wampler and double by Hileman put runners at second and third with NO outs. Kraemer struck out looking. Wampler scores on a groundout by Curry. Runner at third with Burnam at the plate and Burnam goes down swinging. Now 3-2 after seven. Then ISU goes down 1-2-3 in the eighth. As they come up in the ninth...they are down 15-2. ISU gets a walk and nothing else to end the game. The Sycamores had two runs on eight hits and one walk.

These two teams were fighting for at-large births in the NCAA tourney with DBU's RPI in the mid-30's and ISU in the mid 50's.

Coach Heller mentioned problems on the back end--meaning relief pitching--in his pre-game interview. He had good reason to be worried tonight as aside from Dorsett, the other four relievers were totally ineffective...giving up 12 earned runs in two innings!

In addition, the DBU pitching kept the ISU bats quiet.

This will be a big game to "flush" but they've got to do it if they have any hope of still winning this series.

On Saturday's pre-game show, Coach Heller said that after relievers Kudrecki and Hochstedler let the game get a little out of hand, he decided to call on pitchers who hadn't seen much action this season in hopes of saving arms for today and Sunday. He said it backfired. Now, was he admitting defeat and just hoped to keep the score decent?
