they had a celebration for butler at hinkle tuesday afternoon. while the crowd was good, there were still a lot of empty seats to be seen on tv. there were no classes today at butler and you would think that a lot of people in town would have shown up.

didn't we fill hulman center when bird and the boys got back from salt lake city in 1979?

Full house (people were sitting in the aisles) and 25,000 people lining the roads between Hulman Field and Hulman Center. But that was easy with a 100% unemployment rate...lol...

yeah...we were just a bunch of hoosier hicks in terre haute in 1979...lol...

when compared to all those yuppies who rooted for the "Duke of the Midwest"....lol.....

This is the 3-4 pep rally (if you count the one's before the games) in Indy in the past ten days. I think people are tapped out.

Indy not a Butler town

Butler did not have great crowds all year. I, too, was surprised at the small turnout for a team that made it to the title game. Maybe it was during the day and only for students and staff; hopefully, next year they will play before sell-out crowds. Just wish ISU could play them again. We have them scheduled for football, why not basketball?

ISU '79 Celebration

Guys -- I love dearly what we did in '79 and many, many things were handled very well that year given all that happened.
But the Hulman Center celebration the day after -- while it had a great crowd -- was not our finest hour. Very badly handled all around and not a great PR image for us -- I'll just leave it at that. If you were there or watched on TV later that evening you'll know what I mean.

Don't know what you mean. I remember being packed into HC like sardines, a loud raucous crowd, some interesting speeches by coaches and players alike. I really don't have any bad memories of it. What are you talking about, WestBaden?

Dont be so elusive, it was 31 years ago....what happened?

This information is secondhand, so take it for what it's worth:

A friend of mine who is a Terre Haute native and still lives in the area told me that there was fairly significant rioting in town after ISU lost the 1979championship game. The examples he gave included several instances of breaking windows and looting shops on Wabash Avenue. I don't know whether this stuff occcured prior to or on the night of the Hulman Center pep rally.

As I said, take this for what it's worth.

I lived in Terre Haute all my life prior to 1992. Never heard of anything like this. Not that I am all knowing, but I'd think I would remember something like that...

I had heard that there were some minor incidents the night of the game following the game but considering the crowds, that was not unexpected or that unusual. I believe the rally at HC, like Butler's celebration, was on Tuesday afternoon, following the game on Monday. Anyone who says there were major problems is exaggerating or trying to make something out of nothing.
