The Sycamores (6-9) take on Eastern Kentucky (6-10) this evening at 6:00 (ET) at Bob Warn Field in the first of a three game series. Eastern Kentucky enters the weekend with a 6-10 record, going 6-2 at home and 0-8 on the road. The Trees will look to extend that away losing streak!
Weatherwise, we're facing the chance for light showers this afternoon with northerly winds at about 10 mph and a high of 63. No chance of rain Saturday, but there's currently at 50/50 chance for thunderstorms on Sunday.
The Sycamores went 1-3 over their four games at home last weekend, topping Western Illinois in the series opener before falling in the next three (twice to Western Michigan and once to Western Illinois). ISU's three-game skid is their longest since games four through six of last season when ISU fell in the first three games of a series to Texas - San Antonio in February of 2010.
Despite their 1-3 record as a pitching staff, ISU's pitchers finished the weekend with a 3.50 ERA along with 35 strikeouts and just 12 walks over 36.0 innings on the mound.
Colin Rea (3-1, 4.68 ERA) will look to get ISU on the right track. But the real key to victory is to awaken the bats that were so quiet last weekend. ISU's team batting average fell over the past two weeks from .307 to .292. In addition, errors were costly last weekend, as were other free bags!
EKU will trot out the same pitching rotation that swept UNC Asheville at Turkey Hughes Field last weekend. Junior right-hander Matt Fyffe (0-2, 3.75) will start game one, freshman lefty Kyle McGrath (2-0, 7.31 ERA) will start game two and senior right-hander Stephen Hefler (2-1, 2.10 ERA) will start game three.
Today's start for EKU, Matt Fyffe, has just 12 innings under his belt in five appearances (two starts). He has given up 16 hits and five earned runs, with 12K's and just three walks. Five of those hits are for extra bags--four doubles and a homer.
The Colonels offensively are batting .280...but have a powerful heart of the order, led by Richie Rodriguez (.429 & .493 obp), Jacob Daniel (.352 & four homers), Matt Phipps (.333) and Austin Grisham (.327). So, our pitching is key to getting the wins this weekend...and its their pitching that has been a weak spot so far this season on the road.
This weekend's series with will be the seventh, eighth and ninth meetings between the teams, with Indiana State leading the series, 5-1. The Sycamores and Colonels last met in 2003 when ISU swept a three-game series at Turkey Hughes Field. EKU’s last win over ISU came the year before in 2002.
