Levi Ferguson, who came from Northern Iowa after the winter break, partly tore a hamstring while running to first during Friday's opening game of the conference season. Coach Heller says Ferguson's injury is going to be a long recovery. It is possible that he could miss the rest of the season. From my experience with torn hamstrings, Heller is probably correct. I would say he could be back in the closing days of the season...but we won't know if that is possible for about six weeks, to give time to judge his healing progress.

Luke Fieser was scratched from the line-up for the nightcap after injuring his elbow in the first game. The incident occured when a Illinois State baserunner who was rounding third base, clipped Fieser's arm, injuring his elbow. No word as to whether he'll be back in the line-up Tuesday against Chicago State. Jordon Pearson filled in for Fieser at third base.

According to the TribStar article this morning, Heller is very concerned about Fieser's elbow. He said it was Tokarski who clipped Fieser rounding third on his way home in the ninth inning of the first game. Here's what he said:

One day after losing outfielder Levi Ferguson to a torn hamstring, ISU third baseman Luke Fieser was injured in the ninth inning of the first game. He hurt his right elbow when Tokarski ran into it rounding third to tie the game.

The elbow was bent backwards and the injury was severe enough to keep Fieser, ISU’s leading hitter and a strong defensive third baseman, out of the nightcap. The extent of Fieser’s injury is not known, but ISU coach Rick Heller is worried.

“The fact that he, of all people, couldn’t play? That scares me. He’s a guy that will tough it out through just about everything. When he told me he couldn’t play, I said, ‘Are you serious?’ For him to say that, it has to be bad. He couldn’t throw the ball. I’m nervous,” Heller said.
