The JSW Level
is expected to remain on the Tennessee Titans coaching staff under new head coach Mike Munchak. McGinnis -- who coached defensive backs at Indiana State under Dick Jamieson, Dennis Raetz and Tim McGuire -- has been the Titans' linebackers coach and assistant head coach under former Tennessee head coach Jeff Fisher. According to the Nashville Tennessean, McGinnis will probably remain as the assistant head coach under Munchak. The team hired former Houston Texans assistant Frank Bush as their new linebackers coach, however.

Dave McGinnis will assist in all areas of the Titans' defense.

During his 37 years of coaching, Dave McGinnis has held many titles, from head coach to defensive coordinator to linebackers coach.

On Thursday, he added another one to the list — senior assistant coach.

McGinnis shifted roles with the Titans when the team officially hired Frank Bush as linebackers coach. It's a move that will allow McGinnis an opportunity to be involved in all facets of the defense, and the Titans say he'll also have personnel and administrative duties.

"I have a lot of years of experience in this league, and I am just willing to help use that experience to the best of my ability and hopefully to the best advantage to the Titans. I am looking forward to the new role and looking forward to being a help in a lot of areas,'' said McGinnis, who had served as assistant head coach/linebackers since 2005 under Coach Jeff Fisher.

"As your career takes on different stages, I don't think you abandon what your roots are. I enjoy the people part of the business. I'm sure this role will evolve as we move forward. What I do know now is I feel very blessed and fortunate to use my experience to help.''

McGinnis, 59, has seen plenty of change around him since the end of the 2010 season, and it started even before Mike Munchak replaced Fisher as head coach. Fisher fired defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil, and last week Munchak opted to part ways with offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger. A number of other coaches have come and gone on what has become a reshaped coaching staff, with Bush being the most recent addition. Bush most recently served as defensive coordinator with the Houston Texans.

Munchak clearly viewed the well-respected McGinnis as a commodity. A former head coach of the Cardinals who previously worked as defensive coordinator in Arizona, McGinnis will take on a role other veteran coaches have also assumed around the NFL in recent years.

In Indianapolis, long-time offensive coordinator Tom Moore is a senior offensive assistant with the Colts. Earlier this week, the Browns hired former Eagles and Packers head coach Ray Rhodes as senior assistant of their defense.

While new Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray will call plays, McGinnis is expected to be a resource for Gray and all the assistants, as well as Munchak.

"Dave has a wealth of experience and he is going to be able help us in a bunch of different areas — so now we can make the best use of all his skills,'' Munchak said. "I am grateful that he will be taking on this new role, and he will be an important voice for me.''

McGinnis said he has a good relationship with Gray and is familiar with Bush as well.

"I think that Mike Munchak is doing a tremendous job of putting together and molding a staff to fit what he wants,'' McGinnis said. "I'm happy to be part of it and hopefully I can use all my years of experience to help.''

Bush joins the Titans after spending the past four seasons with the Texans, including the last two as defensive coordinator. He has a total of 19 seasons in the NFL with the majority of his experience coaching linebackers. Bush accepted the job with the Titans on Wednesday.

Prior to working with the Texans, he spent three seasons with the Cardinals as linebackers coach and spent nine seasons coaching on Mike Shanahan's staff with the Broncos.

"I am excited about it and looking forward to working with Mike because he has always been a winner," Bush said. "It will be good getting back with the linebackers, and I know I have something to prove. In talking with Jerry, there was a good fit and we see things in a similar way. I want my guys to play aggressively and with passion."
