The Rick Heller show on the radio this evening did not have much information to offer...but here are a few bullet points:
1. This weekend's games with Nebraska-Omaha have been reworked to cut a game from the schedule. This is due to ISU being at the limit for games this season...and since there have been no cancellations, this weekend's schedule was cut to three games. They will play Friday at 6:30; Saturday at 2:00; and Sunday at Noon.
2. They talked about the quality of the starting pitching for the last four games. Even though Bacus didn't have his best stuff Friday night, he really only gave up one run in seven innings. The second run should have been unearned as there was a miscommunication in the outfield which caused two guys to attemt to catch the ball--it went off their gloves. Bacus didn't have his best stuff, but fought to keep control of the game, which he did.
3. Talked about defensively playing well over the weekend (aside from the dropped ball Friday). Heller said he was a little nervous as he had several players out of normal position...Hedges at 3rd...Ort at 1st and Curry in left field.
4. While the bullpen had problems this past week...he praised their work on Tuesday against Valpariso--a game they won in the 16th. The pen held Valpo scoreless for TEN innings.
5. ISU's 31-10 record is the best start since 1987.
6. Heller praised the hitting Sunday as six of the seven runs came with two outs.
7. Regarding the bullpen meltdown on Friday night...Coach Heller said that the first two guys--Kudrecki and Hochstedler actually pitched well and DBU batters got weak hits. Things just went DBU's way, allowing five runs in the eighth. But, he did say the next two guys just didn't have it. Overall 12 runs were scored against ISU in the 8th and 9th.
