What a great win on Saturday! The boys all played hard and clean. No enforced penalties in a half of play is a great sign.
Don't get me wrong about what I'm about to write; I'm glad SDSU did what they did, but don't you find it odd that they went for 2 as early and often as they did? Down 17-15 in the third, they went for 2 (and were stopped) and then again down 17 (I forget the score), they tried it again (and were stopped again).
In my opinion, there are very few cases where going for 2 in the third quarter is a good strategic move. Much better to take the 1 and hope for a break later in the game.
As for going for 2 in the 4th, they were down 23 (3 scores) and scored the touchdown to go down 17 (still 3 scores). If they kick and make it, they are down only 2 scores. Since they chose to go for 2, if they had made it, they'd still have been down 2 scores; however, by failing on their attempt, they are left down 3 scores. It certainly seems to reduce the value of the touchdown they just scored by not taking the more likely 1 point.
Do you think the loss of their kicker influenced the decision that much? Their backup didn't miss on the attempts he had, did he?
