i cover the colts.....todd is the isu beat writer....not me....lol.....as a matter of fact, i helped line up one of the former isu players for an interview with todd.....so there....lol.....
Tom did not get scooped he actually set up the interview for Todd.
Like the article said, this meeting was long overdue. I am pretty confident that some real progress was made. Could someone enlighten me on this one-year residency rule that has ISU at a disadvantage?
IS45, thanks for the reply. It actually makes sense but as Sack says, it could apply to other students as well. I wonder how the other schools answer the same question? Since the majority (or close to it) of ISU players of my generation were from out of state, I wondered how it was handled then? As budgets have tightened over the years, I know that the out-of-state recruits have dropped drastically in the past decade. Interesting question for discussions here. The out-of-state numbers in the late 60's and early 70's were also MUCH higher for ALL students than currently and maybe some of that off-set the added expense for athletes, but have no facts to back that up.Yes, some of our peer schools count out of state players as "in state" after residency for 12 months. Currently our athletes are considered out of state the entire time they are here (4-5 years!). This is important because out of state players actually cost more to the team and count for more scholarships. For example if we filled the team with 100% out of state kids we would lose several full scholarships according to NCAA rules as out of state players at FCS schools just simply count as more than 1 scholarship (it's some weird formula). The hope is that ISU can change the policy (at ISU) to count these kids as in-state after 12 months of residency allowing Trent to offer more scholarships (theoretically he could offer 63 full scholarships but currently only if they are all from Indiana...this amount reduces each time you add an out of state kid) and he could do it cheaper internally at ISU. The NCAA doesn't regulate how a school counts it's student athletes after 12 months. Effectively he would have more scholarships and greater flexibility on recruiting. It's a HUGE step in the right direction if it goes through and would give our coaches more weapons to be competitive! This is my basic understanding…I could be off on a detail or two…feel free to correct or comment on this.
