Another beautiful day for baseball in Dallas as the first pitch at 2:00 (EST) will be greeted with partly cloudy skies and a temperature of around 72-degrees. Winds could be a factor, as they'll be coming from the southeast at up to 20 miles per hour.

In game one, Jason Van Skike, who saw a lot of action last season as the Sunday guy (74 innings, 13 starts), will be brought into the limelight as a Saturday (or even Friday night) guy. Jason has the size and power to be very impressive this season. He needs to have confidence in his game and needs to get his head into the game. He needs to be able to get rid of the fourth or fifth inning glitches and to establish good ball control. Between the ears is where a lot of games are won. Hopefully this will be his year.

Yesterday, it appeared the guys on the bump had some rust and jitters, but showed promise. On paper, we have the pitching, the bats and the fielding to make a good run this year.

In game one, Dallas Baptist sends RHP Jason Pudenz to the mound. Pudenz, last year, only started three games and appeared in just 15 games. He sported an 8.23 ERA and opposing batters had a .303 average. But, this is a new season...so it is hard to say what we'll see today.

In game two, ISU will throw true freshman LHP Sean Manaea. Manaea, a 6'5" 215 pounder, was a high school MVP...but he is making a big leap to Division I ball. Dallas Baptist will send Jared Stafford to the hill today in game two. Stafford was the Patriot's top reliever, making 21 appearances with no starts. Stafford sported a 3.70 ERA and showed good ball control in his 48 innings.

Today's games are available through live stats on the DBU Baseball page and on-line through WISU with Vaso Michels calling the action.

This maybe a team that takes 2/3 of the season to gel and be REAL dangerous by the end. We are going to be a good hitting team this year. Pitching is the key. Rea sounded good for 3 innings. Maybe tired in the 4th. I still look for him to be pretty dominant by the end of the year. Remember Petricka struggled early last year. Hopefully Ort plays today. He was either injured, sick, or in trouble yesterday. I caught the very end of yesterday's pregame show and Heller said we'll see if he can play tomorrow. (Today now)

Hedges scores on a single by Hartley in the 4th. Pearson gets a triple to plate two runs. Score now 6-5. Pearson scores on a sac fly by Ferguson. Ort hits three run homer over the right field scoreboard. A bomb! Yesterday's catcher for DBU is 3rd Patriot pitcher of day and he gets final out. Going to the bottom of the fourth, score 9-6 in favor of ISU.

Ort holds at 2nd. Kraemer walks on a couple of close pitches. At end of 5.5, DBU leads 12-10. 2.5 hours for 5.5 innings!

Lead-off single (14th hit) for DBU in 6th, a walk and an error loads bases with two outs. Grand slam for Austin Elkins. His second in two games! ISU down 16-10. New pitcher is senior knuckleballer Adam Richart who on any other day would be a back-up catcher. Richart gets a pop-up to the infield to end inning...thank goodness.

True Blue...well they also have another game and the arms are young in the season. Last year, the pitchers were ahead of the hitters early in the season. This year, we're hitting well, but so is DBU. This pitching squad needs to mature quickly. What we're seeing is scary. Remember though, that these early games really don't matter much. They HAVE to be ready for conference play.

I understand that, but man someone step up!

True Blue...I hear ya! This is a painfull way to start the season. We did lose some good arms in both starting and relief positions. Van Skike is looking like last year's Van Skike.

In top of 7th, first two ISU batters (Pearson and Ferguson) strike-out. ISU pitchers still don't have a strikeout this game. Burnam grounds out. Still 16-10.

ISU pitchers have not struck out any batters today...while DBU has 5 SO's.
