The JSW Level
ALUMNI WEEK DURING SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE -- APRIL 19-24

In talking to Head Coach Trent Miles last week, we have hit on an idea that would allow former players and coaches a chance to interact with the players and coaches at Indiana State.

In conjunction with the annual Indiana State Football Golf Fundraiser, which is set for Friday, April 23 in Terre Haute and the Blue-White intrasquad spring game, which is scheduled for Saturday, April 24 at Memorial Stadium, we are inviting interested Sycamore football alumni to come to Terre Haute for the week of April 19-24, 2010.

Come for the whole week or come for a couple of days. You will be able to talk to the players, particularly those at the position that you played, to offer constructive comments and encouragement. Due to NCAA rules, you won't be allowed to take part in any on-the-field coaching. But you will be able to meet with players as a group, per your position or as a team, and talk to them.

As for the golf outing, we would like to have the biggest attendance ever for the event. Even if you don't golf (I don't golf), you are still urged to come and hang out, drink a few beers, tell a few stories on each other and have a good time. We'll have a get together afterwards at the Bally.

We've had good turnout from guys who played and coached for and with Dennis Raetz from the 1980s and 1990s. But we really want those guys who were around and played for Coach Huntsman, Coach Harp, Coach Jamieson, Coach McGuire and Coach West.

So now is the time to make your plans for the week of April 19-24, 2010. Circle the dates on your calendar. Make your hotel reservations now. Let's hear from everybody!!!!

Something that I would like to see happen with Indiana State Football Alumni.....

I wrote a feature story for Sunday's Terre Haute Tribune-Star on Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne and his long friendship with former college teammate, and Houston Texans receiver, Andre Johnson. Reggie made a comment in the story that I would like to share you guys.

Here it is:

While the competition between the two is friendly during the season, it's when they get together during the spring and summer when things really start happening. It's family time. It's all about the U.

"It's a family, it's a brotherhood, it's a fraternity, it's everything. We really strive in that, staying close to each other. We're all interested in what's going on in each other's lives. We share everything, making sure everything is on the up and up. We know each other's families. That's just how it is," Wayne said.

"Whenever one's doing something in the community or whatever, we all make it our business to attend. And vice versa. Once you go to the University of Miami, it's goes beyond football. It goes beyond competing on the field. It goes more towards family. My family is your family. Everybody's mine and together. That's just how it's been. That's kind of how it is. It's almost like a sad day when each of us leave for training camp. It's cool in a way. You have a lot of other guys say that they wish that their schools were like that. It's something that we take a lot of pride in and want to continue to keep it going."

That is the feeling that I would like to develop with our group, with the Indiana State Football Alumni. I hope that we can reach that objective. Hope to see some of you at this week's final home game with North Dakota State.
