The Nicks Level
From Wednesday's issue of the Indy Star: "Butler might not have needed to pad its college basketball resume, but why not? National TV. Crowd of 6,065 inside Hinkle Fieldhouse. Nation's longest winning streak."

Of those 6,065 fans, nearly 1,000 were Wright State fans according to the ESPN crew that covered the game. This was the Horizon League's championship game. In the home of the Bulldog's and in the largest city in Indiana the mighty Duke of the Midwest couldn't fill the house.
I view these as pretty embarrassing facts for Butler. Maybe ISU is not as poorly supported by fans as I had believed--use this as a comparison and I feel sympathy for the Butler team--they deserve better. I honestly believe that if the Trees were playing for a MVC championship in the Hulman Center, they would draw more than 6.000 fans. I know the ISU slant to this is purely hypothetical at this point. But don't you agree with me in my view of the Butler crowd being pretty light for a game of this magnitude?

Couldn't agree with you more. But I will say living in the Indy area, heard very little advertisement about Butler Games this year. Usually you would hear it on the radio or something, but not much this year.

They're used to winning their conference, or at least being in the championship game. Maybe the thrill is gone for them. Still no excuse.

I still say that location is an issue for Butler...in terms of Indy. Butler is surrounded by decent neighborhoods to the north, but you gotta go through some pretty seedy areas to get there. I'm not gonna take my family down there for a game at night, I can tell you that. I know the area well, but still...

During the 1999-2001 seasons, the average crowd for a home game was around 6,000... So YES... I'd say that for a championship game, you would have had 8-10 easily.

Heck, for the women's NIT game we had over 5k.

I believe when we played for the conference championship in 2000, we had about 8,700 at the game. Good by our standards...

Of course the students showed up for that game...:censored:

I was there and that was the best turn-out that I can remember by students and Terre Haute...though alot were alumni from the Indy area too.

Do they sell all the seats as individual game seats or are you buying seats for the entire tournament? If the latter is the case then maybe the fans of other schools decided not to hang around after they were beaten. It would then be like Hulman Center where you can't sell seats that have already been sold.

If the seats had previously sold, I would think they would announce the attendance as a sellout.

I live in Indy and had no idea the Horizon Conference Championship was that night. I learned about the game when I saw one of my friends (a Butler Grad) was headed to the game. I heard absolutely nothing beforehand.

I agree...didn't hear a word about it in Indy. Don't even remember seeing anything about it in the paper. I remember one of the news stations mentioning that Butler was playing that night, but that was about it.

Attendance is normally the number of tickets sold not the number of butts in the seats.

Here's the equation at ISU:

Tickets sold+media members+ISU employees working at the game+players+cheerleaders, band, mascot, Sparkettes+up to 1,000 extra to make up for any they may have "missed"

;)

Sadly, it's not only the ISU equation -- uk uses it as well (allows them to set 'attendance' records annually -- sorry, but the 6th-9th players for each team, nor the managers are 'attending' the game...
