Day 1 is over at the MVC meet, it was a mixed bag of good, bad, and really ugly.
For the women, the good...
Senior Erin Reese won the hammer throw with a 214-03 throw, I believe a PR. Cassaundra Roper was 7th place.
In the women's 1500, Moore, Conley, and Quiles all advanced to the final.
The bad and really ugly....
we didn't even enter a single runner in the 10k, that is probably the first time since we've been in the MVC we didn't have a 10k entrant, hard to believe.
ISU didn't have a single girl make the 200 finals, in fact we weren't even close.
We didn't score a single point in the Javelin, Hout was 9th, but to be fair, we have NEVER been good in women's javelin, it's not an event that is competed at the high school level anywhere close to Indiana, so for ISU to every have a good women's Javelin thrower probably isn't going to happen very often.
women's team scores
1) Northern Iowa 28
2) Loyola (Ill.) 25
3) Illinois State 19
4) Indiana State 12
5) Bradley 10
5) Southern Illinois 10
7) Drake 8
8) Missouri State 5
9) Evansville 0
10 Valparaiso 0
For the men, we had a good first day, but from here on out things are not looking good at all.
The good...
Sam Overton set a huge PR and won the Javelin, throwing 198-07, Sam also placed 6th in the Hammer Throw, going 179-08, so he had a very respectable day.
The men's pole vault was the HUGE shock of the day as ISU went 1-3-5, Smith (16-07.5), Whitehouse (16-03.5), and Howard (15-11.75) were certainly not seeded to score that many points, so a huge plus for them.
In the men's 10k, Senior Akis Medrano closed out his Sycamore career with a 2nd place finish in 30:09.7.
Freshman Noah Hufnagel placed 6th in a very encouraging 30:57.34.
The bad and really ugly....
In the 1500 we only advanced one person to the finals, and it's very unlikely he'll score. Our top 1500 runner wasn't even close to advancing, so that's not going to be good.
In the 200, we didn't advance a single sprinter to the finals, and similar to the women we weren't even close to having anyone advance.
The rest of the trials are tomorrow, it's looking like we may not score a single point in the 100, 200, 400, 800, and 1500. The 100, 400, and 800 trials are tomorrow, we'll be lucky to have anyone in the 100 make the finals, we don't even have a single entrant in the 400, again, inexplicable, and our 800 runners just aren't very good compared to the rest of the other MVC 800 runners.
So we're looking at being shut out in 5 running events. Yuck.
Team scores after tonight....
1) Illinois State 45
2) Indiana State 44
3) Northern Iowa 26
4) Southern Illinois 22.50
5) Bradley 13
6) Drake 5
7) Valparaiso 0.50
8) Evansville 0
8) Loyola 0
Yes, we're in 2nd place after day 1, but don't be fooled, potentially not scoring in 5 running events will sink us faster than the Titanic. So we'll see what happens Saturday, who knows?
