Another tough MVC opponent is on our plate this weekend, as ISU travels to Springfield, Missouri. From my viewpoint, the Bears are tougher than last year when we took two out of three in Terre Haute, but perhaps not quite the team they were when they swept us at their yard in 2009.

Here's an interesting portion of the write-up from missouribears.com:

Nine things to know about the Bears against Indiana State...

1. Missouri State state leads the all-time series with ISU by a 54-35 margin. The road team won 16 of 17 games in the series between 2003 and 2008, though that trend has reversed the last two years with MSU sweeping at Hammons Field in 2009 and the Sycamores winning two of three in Terre Haute last season. The Bears are 8-2 in the last 10 meetings between the schools.

2. MSU's offense has hit at least .300 against 11 of the 19 teams the Bears have played this season while registering at least eight hits in all but four contests.

3. Missouri State is 11-6 this year in games decided by one or two runs.

4. Missouri State went 19-11 through 30 games, the eighth time since 1995 the Bears have won at least 19 times in their first 30 tries. MSU has had great success the previous seven times, averaging 38 wins per season, posting an average MVC finish of 2.0 while making four NCAA Tournament appearances. The Bears also won two of their first three league games for the 14th time in 21 MVC seasons. The previous 13 times have resulted in an average league finish of 2.46.

5. Missouri State has won its first two MVC series of the season for the eighth time since joining the league in 1991, and the fourth time in the last six seasons. The Bears have finished second twice and won the league once following the previous three times, and have averaged an MVC finish of 2.29 over the course of all seven occurrences.

6. Missouri State is hitting .318 against opposing starting pitchers and outscoring opponents 30-13 in the first inning. Starters have a 5.59 ERA against the Bears and average just 4.78 innings per start.

7. Missouri State's offense is hitting .308 this season, moving from last to first in the MVC and jumping 250 spots to 30th in the national rankings as of April 17, the largest improvement of any team in the country.

8. MSU has collected 13 pinch hits in 35 tries this season for a .371 average, while the opposition has a mere two pinch hits in 31 games and is batting .100 in those situations.

9. Keith Guttin is now 20 wins shy of the 1,000 mark in his 29th season at Missouri State.

As you can see, the Bears have a potent offense that can strike early. Her's more interesting tidbits about MSU:

Quick Hits
• Missouri State closed the month of February with a winning record (4-3) for the fourth time in the 2000s. The Bears have gone on to win at least 40 games the other three times. MSU also had a winning February record in 1999, and though it failed to reach 40 wins, it did go 38-19 and make the NCAA Tournament.

• Juniors Travis McComack and Kevin Medrano have started 110 games together on the middle infield in their careers and rank 10th (85) and 11th (81), respectively, in career double plays turned. The duo has worked together for 53 of those double plays.

• Missouri State has struck out 212 times in its first 35 games, or 6.23 per nine innings, a 30.9 percent decrease from its 2010 rate.

• Fourteen of the 27 players on Missouri State's roster did not see action for the Bears last season, and 12 of those are new to the program altogether.

• The Bears went 29.2 innings from March 15-19 without allowing an earned run, and went 14 innings over three games from Feb. 26 to Mar. 1 without issuing a walk.

• Missouri State is holding opponents to a .248 batting average with runners in scoring position.

On the mound Friday afternoon for MSU will be their ace, Nick Petree (5-0, 2.77 ERA). On the season, Petree has pitched 52 inninings, giving up 14 walks and striking out 49. Opposing batters have a .230 average. As you can see, he has good control. In fact he has had five appearances in relief with two saves as well. Dan Kickham is the closer. He has allowed no earned runs in his 14 appearances and has 8 saves.

ISU's ace, Colin Rea (6-2, 3.39 ERA), who had a mediocre outing last week, will be looking to show his sharp stuff Friday. And we'll need a sharp outing against this team...no freebies (walks/hit batters) and scattering hits.

Friday's game could be another pitcher's duel unless one team or the other can get to the opposing pitcher early.

Weatherwise, at the 3:30 (ET) it is looking iffy once again as scattered thunderstorms are possible during the game (and throughout the day, too). The gametime temp will be around 74-degrees with gusty southwest winds at around 20 mph. Scattered thunderstorms are also possible Saturday and Sunday. Welcome to the midwest in the spring!!

Lots of media opportunities for Friday's game. You can listen to the game on AM-1300 ESPN Radio or online, follow the Twitter feed, view live stats and follow the on-going blog during the game.

Bulletin:

Due to weather concerns for Sunday, the Sycamores and Bears will play a doubleheader Saturday. Here's the word from Danny Pfrank who's doing th blogging for this series:

GoSycamores.com: One scheduling note for the rest of the weekend -- the radar looks more favorable tomorrow than it does on Sunday, so we'll try to get in two games tomorrow -- first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m. (ET), noon here in Springfield

Weather at 3:30 (ET) gametime: Cloudy and 78-degrees with a stiff southwesterly wind at 15-25 miles per hour with gusts to 30. NO thunderstorms in sight to the west. Good looking weather (except the wind) for today's game.

Hammon's Field has had about .80 of an inch of rain in the past 24 hours.

Winds blowing out to dead center. Rea needs to keep those pitches down and Petree needs to keep the balls nice and high...down the middle of the plate!

Sycamores off to a powerful start in the first inning with a single, walk and a double to drive in two runs.

Still 2-0 at the end of the 2nd.

Comment on today's game blog regarding Levi Ferguson's continued absence from the starting line-up:

GoSycamores.com: Levi's been working hard to get back in the everyday lineup for head coach Heller -- he's been used as a late-game running substitution, but just hasn't been able to find his swing at the plate

Going to the bottom of the third...still 2-0. Petree has set down nine straight Sycamores since giving up the walk and two hits to start the game.

Rea looking sharp today...gives up a one out walk in bottom of third for first Bear baserunner. Then gets a 3-6-1 double play! Still 2-0.

Top of fourth...Sycamores go quietly. Petree has set down 12 Sycamores in a row. This has become the pitcher's duel we thought it could be. We need three or four more runs to feel safe against a team like MSU.

Bottom of 4th...Rea hits first batter on first pitch to him, then walks the next guy on four pitches. Two on with no outs. Loads bases with another walk. RBI double by clean-up batter unloads bases to put MSU up 3-2. Sycamores manage to control MSU to keep score at 3-2.

Sycamores go quietly in top of 5th as Petree has set down 15 in a row.

In bottom of 5th...a walk...stolen base...error and a single produce a run for Bears. Now 4-2 Merkley and Kudrecki warming in the pen. With one out, there are runners at first and third. Sac fly plates another runner. Now 5-2, Bears. Bears playing good small ball and they are taking advantage of free bases and errors. Bunt single puts runners at first and second with two outs. Maddox picked-off by Rea at 2nd to retire the side.

Top of sixth...with two outs in the inning...Ort gets a single after Petree had set down 17 straight batters. Side retiured on a fly ball by Lucas. Still 5-2 in favor of Bears.

Bottom of sixth...Rea hits first batter--Rea has given up three walks and has hit two batters. Next guy singles. Runners at 1st and 2nd. New pitcher for ISU is Brett Merkley. GoSycamores.com: he'll bring senior RHP Brett Merkley into the game -- he's 0-2 on the season with a 4.63 ERA but has pitched very well in his last several outings. Merkley's first pitch is a passed ball and runners advance to second and third. Next batter strikes out looking. One out. Next batter gets a double to score two runs. Now 7-2. A single drives in another run. Now 8-2. Josh Negele warming. Next batter singles to put runners at first and second. Three straight hits off Merkley after he struck out his first batter. Back to the top of the order with one out. Next batter walks. Bases loaded with one out. New pitcher for ISU is Josh Negele. Bears send up their 8th batter of the inning. Next batter goes to a 3-0 count and walks to drive in the ninth run. Sixth walk of the day. A 6-4-3 double play retires the side. Now 9-2 in favor of MSU.

Good thing the game was moved up as a line of thunderstorms will be hitting Hammons Field not long after game ends assuming it doesn't go extra innings.

In top of eighth...Miera goes to 3-2 count and fouls out to catcher. Pearson lines out hard to second. Hileman goes to 3-2 and flys out to center. Still 9-2.

Bottom of eighth...Brandon Dorsett makes first mound appeaerance since healing from an arm injury. This is just his third outing of the year. First batter is now 3 for 3 as he gets a single. Next batter flies out to short right. Dorsett hits next batter. Runners at first and second with one out. Next batter walks to load bases. Next batter goes to 3-2 and walks in the 10th run. Next batter hits a grand slam a walk-off grand slam as the ten run rule is in effect. Final score 14-2.

Brock Chaffin, with his slam, drove in seven of MSU's 14 runs. Rea is the loser, falling to 6-3 on the year. Petree is the winner. This is now the seventh straight loss which matches the losing streak the team experienced to end the 2009 season.

ISU is now 2-5 in conference play and 19-17 on the season.

Due to impending weather Sunday, they'll play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1:00 (ET) with Jason Van Skike taking the first game on the hill and Sean Manaea pitching the nightcap. The weather tomorrow is calling for scattered thunderstorms...so we'll see if we can get two games in.

Does Dorsett ever not hit a batter or two or give up a home run in his limited appearances.....................geez

In conference play, ISU is 2-5. The team batting average for those seven games is .256 and the ERA is 7.19. The opposing teams in conference play have a combined .290 batting average and an ERA of 4.80. ISU has just two homers, but the opponents have 10 in those seven games.
