Lengthy contract extensions.

Example 1) Lansing. Gets a 5 year rollover contract that ISU waited a season or two too long to end (the rollover section). Had no choice but to hope for the best for the next 5 seasons.

Example 2) Mallory. Gave him a 5 year extension in March of 2022 on top of the one year he had left. At that point we had come of two consecutive 5 win seasons and a cancelled Covid season in between (when everyone else played), so I'm not sure how a 5 year extension was even considered anyways. We're in year 1 of that extension now if you're wondering and now we're stuck with him for another 4 seasons after this one and once again hoping for the best.

Bottom line is that ISU has to quit giving out lengthy extensions. If we want to give out a 2 year or maybe 3 year max rollover (with the option to cancel rollover obviously) then so be it, but ISU has to give themselves an out when things start to head south. The only way I'm for a lengthy extension is if we have a coach that has done a great job consistently and has been here for at least a decade as the head coach (loyal to the program). Mitch Hannahs is the perfect example of that.

At this point I'm against giving even Shertz an extension beyond 3 years out from the current date. I personally think he's a great coach, but we all thought Mallory was great after his second season too and look how that's turned out. I'd say most of us initially liked Lansing too. ISU has to quit putting themselves in these bad situations and we need to make sure that if things get really bad we can afford a buyout. Sick and tired of having to accept bad teams for another 4 or 5 seasons because of these long extensions ISU keeps giving out.

Curious what others' thoughts on this are.

Mallory (even though he’s failed) wants to be here. Another coach would try to build up the team all the while looking for another gig. Any coach (except Reitz) who turned the team into a winner moved on for more money.
