Indiana State's superb reliever from a decade past, Joe Thatcher is in the news:
A Kokomo native, Joe Thatcher, will likely begin the season on the disabled list with the San Diego Padres, but once healthy he is expected to be a critical lefty reliever out of the bullpen. Thatcher, who was an undrafted free agent after pitching at Indiana State, had a breakout season last year with a 1.29 ERA in 35 innings spread over 65 appearances with a 1-0 record. He will likely begin his fifth Major League season on the disabled list with a sore shoulder.
Thatcher (2002) is tied with Scott Harlan (2010) for most appearances (33) in one season. Thatcher also has the second lowest ERA in a season (1.74 in 2002) for pitchers appearing for more than 40 innings. Over his four years at ISU (2001-2004), he appeared in 92 games (2nd place all-time).
