KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- As players that could likely be in this year’s Final Four gathered around, Larry Bird and Earvin “Magic” Johnson were among the newest class of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.
Bird and Johnson headlined a class that also included former Oklahoma star Waymon Tisdale, former Michigan St. coach Jud Heathcoate, Kentucky State’s Travis Grant, former University of Alabama-Burmingham and Memphis St. coach Gene Bartow and contributor Bill Wall.
Johnson and Bird, linked for the ages after their historic 1979 NCAA championship game, said that they used each other to make themselves better basketball players.
“Indiana St. and Michigan St. put the madness in March Madness,” Johnson said. “He not only made me a better player, but he made me a better man.”
Bird, who wrote a book with Johnson this year, said he was more than happy to go in with his former adversary and current friend.
