Getting to hang out with the likes of Mr. Basketball DeShaun Thomas (Fort Wayne Luers) and Terone Johnson (Indianapolis North Central) has proven to be a breathtaking experience for Jake Kitchell.
ALL-STAR BOYS BASKETBALL

-Where: Bellarmine University, Louisville, Ky. (Friday). Conseco Fieldhouse, Indianapolis (Saturday)
-When: Friday at 7:30 p.m. EDT. Saturday at 7 p.m.

-Indiana all-stars: DeShaun Thomas (F.W. Luers); Terone Johnson (Indianapolis North Central); Chrishawn Hopkins (Indianapolis Manual); Travis Carroll (Danville); Russell Byrd (F.W. Blackhawk); Donnie Hale (New Albany); Jake Kitchell (South Central); Erik Fromm (Bloomington South); Julian Boatner (Bloomington North); Kegan Clark (Jeffersonville); Michael Harris (E.C. Central); Neal Beshears (Winchester); Daniel Turner (Mt. Vernon); Tyrae Robinson (Bowman Academy).
-Notes: Indiana leads the overall series, 81-42, including a pair of wins last season (78-65 and 64-49). ... F.W. Luers' DeShaun Thomas was Indiana's Mr. Basketball this year."It's just crazy seeing for myself just how talented some of these guys really are," said the former South Central standout. "A couple of times, I've found myself just standing there and watching what some of them can do. All I know is that Kentucky better come ready to play. There's no doubt I know we will."
Chosen as a member of the Indiana All-Star basketball team, the 6-foot-9, 220-pound Kitchell hopes he can be of some service Friday and Saturday when he participates in the annual Indiana-Kentucky All-Star basketball series.
Kitchell contributed two points, six rebounds, four assists, and one blocked shot Monday in Fort Wayne as Indiana posted a 125-89 win over the junior all-star squad. In Wednesday's 92-78 loss to the juniors in Rushville, he had zero points, four rebounds and one block.
"What I've found to be amazing is just how well we share the ball," Kitchell said in a phone interview Tuesday from Indianapolis. "Even though we've only practiced and played together a few times, I believe we've got really great chemistry.
"We've got so much talent that I don't even have to worry about scoring. The coaches said they want me to just concentrate on rebounding and playing defense, so that's what I've been doing since I got here."
The Indiana State-bound Kitchell left in mark in Union Mills as the Satellites' all-time leading scorer with 1,643 career points.
During the 2009-10 campaign, Kitchell averaged 22.3 points, 15.9 rebounds, and 3.3 blocks in helping the Satellites to a 17-7 mark.
"It was disappointing that we didn't do well in the state tournament (runner-up to Triton in the Class 1-A Triton Sectional), but I don't have any regrets," Kitchell said. "I believe I had a great career there and helped South Central achieve a lot of success.
"I'd like to think I matured a lot both as a person and a player this past year. I became a lot better at determining the difference between a good shot and a bad one. I also thought my passing ability improved, which should help me a lot when I get to Indiana State."
