Going into the season, Coach Heller said of starters Petricka and Rodriguez, "Our top two pitchers are #1 caliber guys...It gives us a nice combination of the hard-throwing right-hander and a mid-80's left-hander with one of the best change-ups in the conference." The third starting position would be a competition between Jason Van Skike and Blake Drake. Looking at the relievers, Heller said Brett Merkley would start the season as the closer...with Van Skike also seeing time at the end of games.

My take...after examining each game in real time...is that our starting pitching has overall been spotty...with bright spots now and then. A lack of consistency...too many walks, hit batters...wild pitches. Petricka will have a brilliant game followed by a melt-down. Rodriguez is having control issues with the change-up and breaking ball. BUT, this is what pre-conference play is all about, isn't it? Van Skike appears to be the shoe-in now for the third starting position as Blake Drake has consistently had control issues. Drake has seen just 6.1 innings of work giving up nine earned runs...four homers in that mix. I see him as a mid-week starter for the time being if he can begin hitting his spots better. He has a low-90's fastball that can work well if it's in the right spots and shows movement.

Out of the pen, the relievers as a whole are looking pretty good. Scott Harlan is tied with Tyler Browning with six appearances. Harlan exhibits excellent control with no ERA, no walks, no HBP, no WP and is being used as a specialist is tough situations, seeing just 4.2 innings. Browning has been a very pleasant surprise as a true freshman. Control issues at times...but starting to smooth out. Browning has given up just two runs in 10 innings. He has hit five batters and thrown four wild pitches. Brandon Dorsett has also been a solid reliever with good control giving up just one run in six innings...but has five walks. Brett Merkley has given up just one hit in 5.1 innings, but three runs. Kinda wierd. He hits his spots. Three walks and a couple of wild pitches have led to those runs. As Heller said before the season started, Merkley looks like he should be the closer as he has eight strike-outs and hits his spots. Kevin Mann has three wins as a reliever and is generally stable with a 4.91 ERA in 11 innings of work. JT Stentfenagel is also a reliever we hope comes along. He has given up 10 hits and five runs in six innings, but has good control. Most of his runs have been with the three homers he has allowed. Brandon Flora is throwing strikes for hits, giving up 10 hits and six runs in five innings of work.

O.K. Your turn...what do you see...now and in conference play which starts in 10 days!

Blue, I love your analysis! Nice to see some people actually care about baseball!!

Harlan and Browning are doing outstanding jobs this year. It's funny cause everyone thinks you have to throw high 80's or low 90's to get people out, and these two definitly aren't that type. It's simple, hit your spots and you'll be succesful. Blake Drake needs this put into his head. Kevin Mann does a pretty good job out of the pen too. He has one of the best curve balls I've seen. He can consistently throw it for strikes, at any count.

Petricka and Rodriquez have struggled at times. I'm predicting Petricka to have a dominant game this Friday against Western Michigan. He was pretty good last start with 12 K's but I'm seein only 1-2 walks next game.

Van Skike has done a good job I think. Being the Sunday starter isn't an easy task. I feel he will continue to get better.

It would be nice to take 3 out of 4 or even a sweep this weekend. It's possible too, only if this team would play to its potential That would be great heading into conference play.

good analysis blue, but when i played having good control and hitting spots didnt go along with 5 walks in 6 innings or 3 walks in 5 innings. i remember good control being 1 walk every 3 innings as a minimum for good control. as for the wild pitches goes, you have to look at what count the wild pitch is in, because a lot of 0-2 pitches are suppose to be in the dirt and its a matter if the catcher can handle the ball. I do agree with you that the pitching has been strugling, especially starting pitching. One thing that could help them is getting some runs early in games. making the other team feel that they have to score early in the game makes it easier for starters to just get up there and pitch, but being the team hasnt been scoring early to often, the other team is more relaxed up at the plate. just my thoughts a little bit, i know they dont mean to much, just an idea to think about. overall i think that the team is starting to figure things out, they had a huge comeback last night against St. Louis and should have a good weekend against Western Michigan:sycamores:

sycamores28, i just talked to one of the players on the team this year and he said that Van Skike and Petricka are switching starts, maybe this will help the team win more friday games being Van Skike has the lower ERA

Regarding Matt King. I haven't heard anything. He hasn't played and has not been mentioned publicly by the coach. Perhaps he is red-shirting this season as it appears Shane Crain (Heller has said this is likely). If anyone knows any info on King, please post.

I was wondering if Jake Hartley is redshirting? He had great numbers in high school.

Another good question. I believe the NCAA rules only allow for one redshirt per baseball team. Medical redshirt is another issue. And, academic redshirt may be still another issue. Does anyone know for sure what the rules are?

Hmmm..thats interesting.. Hope Petricka handles it in a positive way. We'll need him to get his stuff together if they wanna compete in the MVC again this year.

Hartley is going to have a hard time getting some playing time this year. There are about 3 guys ahead of him on the depth chart at first.

This is why I hope he's redshirting.

Although, I would think he is just behind Liniger on the depth chart. However, a left handed pinch hitter is something we could use.

Behind Liniger would be Ben Caple and Robby Ort.

Nothing against Caple, but I sincerely hope Hartley is a better college hitter than him. Ort is a starting outfielder for us obviously so I don't think he's going to play much first unless we are in a pinch. Like yesterday. Even if he never started, I would think he could be a lefty pinch hitter although Ball had been filling that role some.

According to Jake Hartleys facebook status "He officially joined the redshirt group"

I think the redshirt group includes Shane Crain, Jake Weinzapfel, and Hartley
