SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Missouri State will lose scholarships in football and men's basketball after failing to meet the NCAA's requirements for academic progress.

The university said Wednesday that the basketball program will lose one of its 13 scholarships for the 2011-12 season, while football will lose 2.83 scholarships for 2010-2011.

The four-year average required score for all NCAA Division I sports is 925. The football program recorded an academic progress rate of 921, while basketball had a score of 908.

Athletic director Kyle Moats said the school has implemented changes to better monitor classroom performance, provide more academic support and increase accountability.

The 1 lost in basketball will probably hurt more than the 2.8 in football, but that's still enough to make an impact. Certainly helps our causes a bit.

Could you please provide three ways it helps our causes a bit? Can you identify those, just for basketball?

I"m lost on how it helps ISU? If we finish 9th next year and they finish 10th in the basketball standings, how does that help us?

If they are less competitive, how does that help ISU or the MVC conference? Doesn't that make us look weaker? Doesn't a stronger conference top to bottom, help everyone's cause?

If our strength of schedule is already weak or low, how does losing more, help ISU and the MVC for post season tournament invitations?
