From the front page of today's Indy Star:
Indiana is spending 1/2 million $ to reintroduce the woodrat in 2 counties in southern Indiana. It's nice that we have full employment and schools are fully staffed so that this is an affordable and wise expenditure. I don't care what generated these $; this is ridiculous.

Check out what Purdue extension says about these rodents.

Reading the Star's story --- I think that $500K can ONLY be spent on programs -- isn't it comprised of the state tax refunds that some Hoosiers DONATE to that fund?? (at least that's my recollection when I filed state taxes in Indiana...)

10 years ago, it's wouldn't have even made the Star --- gives you an idea of how bad the Star has gotten

Yes, you are correct on the donations aspect. I know and understand that, but that doesn't mean I have to approve of it But, to spend it on a disease carrying rat? Yes, I know it's not the Norway rat, but still. . .I find it hard to believe there is not a more deserving critter. I'm guessing that many of the tax payers who donated to this fund (I am one) are not happy with the decision to return the woodrat to Indiana. You are dead on with your evaluation of the Star. I'm off my soapbox now and will get on with the important things in life like mowing the lawn.

Don't disagree --- this is the same fund that re-introduced Bald Eagles, Ospreys and Peregrine Falcon's and the River Otter... I've no idea what other eastern woodland 'critters' are 'missing' from Indiana...

Bobcats? Lynx? Grey foxes? --- Let's HOPE they refrain from bringing back Cougars (though it may put a dent in the damn white-tail population...)

I wonder IF an appropriate use of this money could have been something (including research) to help repopulate the honey bee? Numbers of bees has been declining and we need them to pollinate plants.

A great idea --- know folks are trying to solve the mystery in the death of colonys but 95% of the population has no clue that bees (and other insects) play in crop pollination
