Listened to a podcast that featured JS recently and his contract at LMU was discussed. He was on a 5 year roll over contract similar to what GL had. Personally, I would be in favor of giving JS that job security and increase his buyout to a much larger figure it is now.

I’ve seen information that people are working behind the scenes to keep JS around and I hope that is true. What JS has done for the basketball program is unbelievable and in return what basketball does for the university and community has been on display.

Yes, we absolutely have people putting together a serious pile of cash, our problem however is Deb Curtis. She absolutely will not allow coach to have a higher paying contract. She won't let anyone make more than she does and it may cost us the best coach we've ever had in our D1 era. I hope we can get it all figured out to keep him here until the new president arrives and allows a better contract to be drawn up.

didn't Ol' Dan Bradley have the same belief system? that the Univ PRES should be the highest paid person on campus?

He did. But we will never know what he would be willing to do to maintain this amount of public recognition and exposure our basketball team is giving us. This is especially important considering how far our enrollment has fallen in the last few years. They need to realize that HCJS is not only coaching basketball, but also advertising in a way that our school can't accomplish via typical methods.

I have a legitimate question i was wondering about. With the president going, and Clink gone, who would be heading up this charge to get HCJS more money and contract renegotiation? I would think you would have to have at the least people in those two positions to do that??????????? Debbie isn't gone till June and Clinks replacement likely wont be till the new Pres gets settled. We keep talking about "People" are working on it, but is it people who can get it over the finish line?

I mean it has to be donors/ISU Foundation/etc. Lots of moving parts at ISU. She can’t stop them from looking to raise money or people willingly giving their money for the basketball coach salary.

What is ironic and concerning is in the same podcast, he mentioned one reason he left LMU because of a new president and A.D. came in at the end of his tenure there and it was a different than the previous administration. Hopefully, he stays around long enough to give the new regime a chance and they give him the keys and resources to run the program like he was promised when he took the job.

Fun fact about JS though, he originally was going to leave LMU for the Little Rock Arkansas job and was hired but the president at Little Rock Arkansas vetoed the hire and they went another direction.

Below is the link to the podcast and it's worth the listen.

All eyes on the Board of Trustees. Prez hiring decision is make or break for the University and Athletic programs, in so many ways...

BOT, please only hire someone who understands the value of winning Athletic programs, knows how to leverage Athletic success for the overall good of the University, and is willing to appropriately invest in marquee coaches and coaching staffs.

Agree with the posts in this thread. Such a knowledgeable forum. HCJS (and coaching staff) value far exceeds games played on the hardwood. He's a blessing to the University, the Wabash Valley, and alumni abroad.

When HCJS receives a new contract from ISU, I sure hope the other coaches & staff members also receive some love. They're a part of this amazing program, as well.

Would also love to see increased incentives in any new contract. Coach does not seem like a greedy person, quite the opposite, but it's human nature to strive towards goals. I'd also incentive the crap out of any new contract, with enough financial incentive to mean something.

I liked hearing that LMU continued to make the job more and more appealing to HCJS. Smart.

It would sure be nice if the University was able and willing to pay the coach appropriately, instead of relying on boosters. Imagine if the University fully invested in the bball program, and then boosters and fundraisers could focus like a laser on NIL.

Please don't misinterpret, I'm not advocating for cancelling other program(s). I've already spoke my peace about that once. Please don't hijack this thread.

Go Sycamores!

If the excitement, publicity and exposure Coach Schertz and the Men's Basketball program have provided STATE isn't appreciated and EMBRACED by the next candidates for President and Athletic director...simply put...they are UNQUALIFIED for the respective positions.

Whether stuffy academics like it or not, more often than not, the public persona of a university is it's athletic programs. When alumni were asked in a recent survey last year, "what is Indiana State most known for"?, respondents overwhelmingly said "Larry Bird". Doesn't mean STATE doesn't have MANY excellent degree programs of study. If you asked folks what the University of Alabama is most well known for, it's not a specific academic program....all of which are probably outstanding. Many folks, if asked the same question about IU, as much as the Kelley School of Business is world renowned, it's equally know for it's past history of basketball success. BOTH great academics and athletics can co-exist. But, 10,ooo people don't show up to watch a Chemistry class.

Here's hoping STATE soon becomes known for it's excellent academics AND the continued (and hopefully LENGTHY) success of Coach Schertz, the basketball program, the baseball program, etc.
