The Nicks Level
Are the officials at all Valley games as bed as the ones we seem to get? You guys that watch other games--are they all that bad? I read what you write here during games and listen to Fritz and Renn. I wonder if you get caught up in the heat of battle sometimes. But the radio guys try to stay off the officials most of the time. But at Evansville you could hear the disbelief on many of the calls. I know it's a tough job, but some of what I hear makes me question their competence. I remember the Shox always saying the Valley screwed then all the time. Is it really that bad?

I think college refs are bad at all levels. As far as wsu is concerned, the only screwing that was going on was the valley screwing whoever they were playing. That didn't help the league in the long run.

That was certainly true in the 2014 MVC Tourney Finals; there were several calls that ensured we couldn't go on an extended run.... That the point spread was 7+ for the game

Officiating is bad in all conferences in college basketball. I watch a lot (probably too much) college basketball and it is rare to see a well officiated game.

Refs are wildly inconsistent in their application of the rules, and often times are very inconsistent just from one half to another. Over the years they have allowed more and more contact and then each year the NCAA decides it needs to reign that in, but after about two weeks (and a lot of complaining by coaches and players) they just start to let things slide back to what they were.

Also, there are too many refs who give far too much leeway to offensive players. I have seen games where what you should do is just drive every time because all you have to do is get into the lane and bump into someone and they will put you on the line. Don't bail out offensive players who are driving the ball to nowhere hoping to get a call.

I would say the biggest problem is that they continue to try to change habits of kids that are in college. What needs to happen is that you have to start enforcing tight rules on making contact when kids are young so they don't develop those habits. Often times kids are allowed so much contact and then they get to college where everyone is even bigger, stronger and faster and then we decide "ok this is too much we need to dial this back". Too late.

Start enforcing rules against contact early and teach kids the right way and then stay consistent with it as they go through high school and into college.
