Hmmm...

http://www.indystar.com/article/201...Where-will-Big-Ten-expansion-end-Nobody-knows

This is the story in the Indy Star today about the Cornhuskers likely joining the Big Ten as soon as today.

Didn't realize the Big Ten had invited them!!

Will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Anyone this this item:

http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=20106080341

or this 'rebuttal?'

http://www.indystar.com/article/201...04/SPORTS/Horizon-commissioner-defends-league

Think I have to agree with karen weaver and (respectfully) tell Jon LeCrone (horizon league commish) to pull his head out of the sand -- I didn't realize that the ostritch was the horizon league mascot...

Think I have to agree with karen weaver and (respectfully) tell Jon LeCrone (horizon league commish) to pull his head out of the sand -- I didn't realize that the ostritch was the horizon league mascot...

Karen Weaver (see first link above), an Athletic Director who knows which side of the bread is slathered with the butter of money she’s interested in, opts (to switch the metaphor) for programs to get fully pregnant or else:

“What will happen to the significant investment that Butler and other rising Division I programs have made in their athletic programs? If it shakes out, we could see the rise of Division I-AA all over again -- a virtual minor league -- this time with a whole new cast of characters.”

Jon LeCrone (see second link above) tries to take the high road, emphasizing the values of thoughtful birth control, but then slips into the following which seems to say it’s all right to get a little pregnant:

“Instead, we are working every day to provide the best possible experience for more than 1,600 student-athletes. That includes building our own digital media platform, the Horizon League Network, and filling it full of content that underscores our daily commitment to our model of athletics.”

As the great Fats Waller put it: “Money makes you funny.” And college athletics has been “funny” for a long time. This latest scramble in the alleys of avarice and hubris is particularly telling, pitiful and nauseating all at once.

Maybe so...

...“Instead, we are working every day to provide the best possible experience for more than 1,600 student-athletes. That includes building our own digital media platform, the Horizon League Network, and filling it full of content that underscores our daily commitment to our model of athletics...”

but the average / casual fan will not care about LeCrone's point of "providing the best possible experience for more than 1,600 student-athletes..."

they care about WINS.

I love college sports but this move is about more $$$.

Long term, it is not a good thing.

it is about more money, but eventually the money will run out. College football will overprice itself and with little completition outside of the even larger power conferences will be pretty bad...taking the excitement and relevancy of the college football to an all time low. I think this is all a bad move. I don't see this as any different than what the IHSAA did when they destoyed the best sports tournament in the world...it backfired! This most likely will too. Nebraska, as an example has well established rivals out there...now they are all of the sudden start playing Indiana every year? Who cares?

Nebraska's rivalries with Colorado, Missouri and Oklahoma aren't what they once were though and in their defense, they can't afford to continue the path they're on where the Texas schools continue to dominate financially and further force Nebraska into irrelevance. They could have a great border rivalry with Iowa and the traditional powers of the Big 10.

Oh they will have new found rivalries, for sure. But why? For more money. Nebraska isn't hurting in the money department, they still sell out every game, they are still a well known football program (are not the powerhouse they have been in the past I agree). I just don't think that this move is the best for the college sports...but I could be completely wrong.

You're NOT wrong

This (and the other moves) will very likely spell the end for the mid-majors; the issue now if football (and money) BUT it'll trickle into the rest of NCAA sports.

BTW -- Boise State just announced a move TO the Mountain West from the WAC... A good move for them; maybe the Mtn West will be able to force their foot into the BCS door (but I'm doubtful)

Channel 8 news is reporting that Nebraska has been accepted into the Big Ten effective July 1, 2011. Another team to beat the snot out of IU every year.

done Deal

This mornings paper confirm they are moving to Big 10 and that there will likely be a conference playoff tournment in football in 2011. Neb. sited Stability as a reason for the change.

Just how much did Texas steal??

Wow -- After the deal that texas shoved down the rest of the Big 12 (10) members, is it any wonder Nebraska wanted a more equitable playing field?

Saw that Utah has been invited to the Pac-11...

Texas will be starting HornsTV or some other 'appropriately' named network; in a Not-So-Surprising announcement; Okla Univ. has announced IT'S intention to 'investigate' the creation of 'SoonerVision'...

Bill Self will likely grimace every time the Jayhawks travel to Austin... while it may be hard to do -- I think I'll be cheering for the Jayhawks; (and Baylor and Io State and K-State, etc, etc...)

Heard Texas will get the $20 million that Colorado and Nebraska will pay the conference so they can leave. That is absolutely disgusting. As if they need the money.

Hadn't heard that but KU, K-State, Baylor and tx Tech were so HAPPY to have the shorthorns stay, they'd have agreed to ANYTHING.

Yes, "disgusting" is the word for it. That and "business as usual" in the board rooms of Big Bucks College Sports, Inc..
