Terre Haute elected the youngest Mayor in its history today. Brandon Sakbun defeated incumbent Duke Bennett. Just a little FYI

I don't have a problem with Brandon Sakbun, don't know him at all. I just hope Terre Haute continues its steady improvement that has been happening over the last 8 years or so. We have lots of big things in the works or already started/recently finished and those happened under Duke's watch. I appreciate the efforts of Mayor Bennett and his personable demeanor. He is a nice guy and genuinely wants Terre Haute to succeed. Hopefully this new leadership continues it or makes it even better.

Yepp. He has an opportunity to take advantage and a lot of credit for things that have happened in the last several years. Duke was a good rep for the community and hardly ever missed an ISU game

I'm honestly surprised by the results as it wasn't even all that close (5666-3806). If I had voted in this election I would have voted for Duke Bennett, although I definitely think the city's constitution (if it has one) needs to be ammended to limit the office to two terms. I don't know anything about Brandon Sakbun, I just hope he doesn't turn out to be some radical left wing fruitcake that runs Terre Haute into the ground.

I don’t think you need to worry about that. He’s a good guy and comes from a great TH family. It’ll be good

There seems to be a lot of redeeming qualities about the young man. My worry is that he is so young and inexperienced he could be easily influenced by seasoned/agenda pushing politicians/ lobbyist. Terre Haute has a lot of good things in motion right now and good leadership is needed to make sure we capitalize on them. Duke Bennett, while many seemed to think he needed to go, has done a great job leading us to a brighter future. Yes, we have issues, as does every city, but we are building and I know we are in better shape than we were 16 years ago. I hope Brandon becomes a strong leader who will continue to make Terre Haute better and not just use us as a political stepping stone.

The guy has impressive credentials. An Army Ranger, IU Kelly School of Business, A leader in the Army. He sounds sound and as they say a Political leader is only as good as the people he surrounds himself with. If he puts good people in the right places Terre Haute will thrive. The only thing i laugh about in looking at his pictures the first thing I thought was he could pass as a Tanoos! 😂

I was told by a close friend who lives in Terre Haute that he met with the new mayor this past summer, and Brandon wanted to know how to reach out to the colleges in town. They brainstormed some good ideas, like meeting with the freshman classes in August, or hosting a downtown fair for all campus when the students return to campus.

Mr. Sycamorefan96,
What exactly would a "radical left wing fruitcake mayor" do to run T.H. in the ground in a state dominated by Republicans.
Indian

Oooops......computer issue....Indiana has a Republican governor (I voted for him), legislature, 2 U.S. Senators, and the 8th congressional district
is also in Republican hands. In short, with our current political situation as it is, it is difficult to see Mayor Sakbun taking T.H. down via a radical left wing scheme.
Thanx for your time in reading my opinion.

Appreciate your opinion. I'm naturally kind of leery of most Democrat politicians, but as I stated, I really don't know that much about Sakbun. I hope he turns out to be a great mayor because it's in the best interests of Terre Haute for him to succeed and I'm definitely going to give the guy his fair shot to see how he does. You never know, I may end up becoming one of his biggest fans. Only time will tell.

Outsider's perspective, but hope the young mayor means some new ideas and youthful energy for the city.

You should have stopped typing after you said you didn't cast a vote in this election.

So sad that this conversation had to turn to a negative in politics. That said, he has to do better than the GOP. Indiana is a state where a teacher has to out a student to his/her parents for being gay or possibly be fired. What could go wrong? A far-right parent who rejects the child who then commits suicide. Give the guy a chance.

You literally just did the same thing with your entire post 😆😆

I literally said in post #11 that I was going to give him a fair shot and that I may even end up being his biggest fan, so I'm not sure what more you want there.

Not sure what "being gay" has to do with anything either. I also just looked and that's not even what the law is. The law is that if biological male Samuel wants to be be "identified" at school as a female named Samantha the school has to notify the parents.

I think you found your far leftist…Mr. Bill makes up a law in his head and accuses the GOP of being responsible for suicide…weird.

Mayor Bennett did a fantastic job in his time as mayor and I was proud to support him. I've talked to Brandon several times over the last few months and he is an intelligent, hardworking man and I wish him nothing but success. He and I have already met since the election as well as exchanged several texts. I look forward to working with him to continue the progress we've made in recent years.
