Gotta Hav

The Wade Level
Did anyone else have Mr. Selge as a teacher besides me?

I took his (WSI) Water Safety Instructor class.....and passed! We probably started with 25 students, and probably finished with 15.

He did not just let anyone get a WSI Certificate. I'll never forget the day we had to swim, if memory serves me correctly, a 400 yard swim with street clothes on.

I was about 100 yards into this, I ended up facing away from him at the other end of the pool. Mr. Selge yells "Hagerman!!! Quit holding on to the side of the pool!!!!"

Of course, I wasn't the only person he yelled at that day, cause most of us were holding on to the side of the pool at one time or the other, throwing up from the strain of completing that swim.

God's Blessing for this man, and his family...another true All-American hero, and bulldog-of-a-man!!! The obituary is worth the read....I did not know he was also a Navy Commander during WWII, and that's where he met his wife.....a Navy Nurse. What a life.

I'd be pretty sure that the 10 who did NOT finish that class, drowned and were found at the bottom of the Tirey pool. Yes I had him in class. Sad to see him go.

I was the only guy swimming widths of the pool when everyone else was swimming lengths. Thought my brother would exempt me but he would not sign-off. He was one of many great people in the P.E. Dept. Good man.

I talked with Paul about many sports at ISU but he was the only member of the physical education department to provide me with information about ISTC's boxing program.

Mr. Selge caught onto my effort to scam him as a beginner swimmer so he took me to a room where gymnastics team members did trampoline exercises. He put a harness on me and had me bouncing up and down and then aerial somersaults. After a couple of weeks of this he introduced me to the 10 meter diving board where he told me to attempt various acrobatic dives in which there were several that smarted like Hell when "Belly Flopping" or landing on my back. He would just laugh as he knew I had tried to scam him and he had stuck it to me.
