PD INDY ALUM

The Sycamore Level
We are now in Mid May almost 30 days after the portal window has closed. Can someone tell us how many players are still in the portal and unsigned? At what point will those players left in the portal be forced to drop out of college basketball or perhaps seek a transfer to Division II or III schools? I know summer practice starts in July, but is there really a drop dead date for portal players to lose out on picking up a Division One offer?

Doing some quick and probably sloppy counting in VC there are 1,210 players in their transfer list that shows a ? for the players "New School"

1. Portal closing only means players can no longer enter the portal (Except if their coach leaves)
2. There is no deadline for schools to fill out their roster. Although it is ideal to fill your roster before summer workouts.
3. Not every player in the portal finds a home. It's on the players to find a school that has spots available that's interested in them.
4. Summer works start June.

Thanks to all for the updates. So, it seems like summer workouts start in 30 days. Therefore if we are to get a portal player from a Div One program we currently have 2,600 players to choose from that do not have offers. Bluestreak, I am not clear what your post means about 1,210 players in the portal with a ? for a new school.

Thanks Backer! I think I get it now. Our coaching staff has a month to fill our last couple of scholarships and has a lot of talent to recruit from. No need to panic at this point. We all hope our transfers that we have signed from Div Two and NAIA will be able to adapt their game to Missouri Valley competition. I am looking forward to us signing a solid Division One player or two in the next thirty days.

keep mind that there are players like gray and teel who put their names in portal but have no eligibility. There could be 50 or 500 other players with no eligibility. I haven’t seen the number so i don’t even know where to guess.

Edited to add: I wonder how those situations are going because if you’re a coach you might have a guy on the line with a small chance of gaining of year based on whatever their situation is. Wonder what the school could do if they gave a guy a scholarship and he was never eligible. Besides academic eligibility issues I wonder what kind of precedent even exists for that.

I don’t know anything about what’s going on with the recruiting now but what if Aaron gray could go another year or half year??? If you got a handful of guys on hold then I’d take a dude like gray. Probably sounds unrealistic but you’d imagine there are coaches out there dealing with decisions just like that.
