Its being said that this series against The Citadel is going to be tougher than last weekend's series at Creighton. The Citadel has already achieved an 11-1 record in conference play and their RPI ranking is #14 on Boyd's World. And, two weeks ago, The Citadel was #25 in the nation on Collegiate baseball's Top 30 poll. They have since fallen off the top 30.
The opening game will be a pitcher's duel between Jake Petricka (4-4, 4.53 ERA), who is reaching his mid-season form and The Citadel's ace, Asher Wojciechowski (7-0, 2.62 ERA). Woj (as I'll refer to him) has 49 innings with 14 earned runs, 16 walks and 68 strikeouts...which places him at #1 in the nation! Woj does not have a complete game, although he appears to go through the seventh or eighth every time. He and Petricka should put on a show. Overall, The Citadel pitching staff has the same ERA as ISU, 4.84. They have held their opponents to a .265 batting average.
On offense, they have a .306 batting average. Their key player is Nick Orvin who is batting .395. He hits for power and in 119 at-bats has struck out 20 times and walked 23 times. A handful of other players have potent bats.
It will be incredibly important for us to ban mistakes and walks. No freebies! Friday's game starts at 4:00 (ET). Saturday at 2:00 and Sunday at 12:00 Noon (changed from original time of 1:00 p.m.)
All three games are available online through WISU with Live Stats service available. Plus, video is availble through The Citadel's site (see the thread that addresses the particulars.
