it was in the high school notes in today's Indy Star sports section. He would be a great get if they can do it.

I watched Shakir play against my Brownsburg team in the regional game...He might be small but very powerful, quick first step and a down hill runner...didnt get to see alot of big runs cause Brownsburgs D held he to around 50 yards, but Shakir is a good player

a lot of major schools are interested...but.....

his size, 5-7, might scare away those schools from offering full rides.....they like their running backs to to be 5-9 to 6-1 or even bigger....indiana state would be a perfect place...we've done very well with smaller running backs....

he's a different kind of running back....

He can break a long run....his speed, quickness...can turn a short gain into a home run....I've seen him a couple of times....hhe is a play maker....and you can never have too many play makers.....We haven't had any big-play guys in recent years.....He is that kind of runner.....

He is in the mold of a Vincent Allen, David Wright.....

both former outstanding running backs at Indiana State.....

I watched play our very undersized defence, and he had 1 run over 10 yards. But I was thinkin dont we have good RB's for the future? Luke Harris, or Jameel High

Showtime....

I haven't seen Luke or Jameel, but I have seen Shakir Bell and what he can do on a football field...his spin moves.....making people miss.....quick feet.....can turn a no gain into a 15-20 yarder...or a medium-sized gain into long touchdown runs.....he could be a difference maker....

Just read about Patrivk Ivy, that we might offer him....If he has a offer from Mizzu and attention from Nebraska Miami (FL) and Illinois, should we even put that offer on the table?

Rhetorical Question: Are We in ANY position...

But I dont understand y we should offer a RB?? I dont think thats what we need right now

to turn down talent?

TMiles has made strides but I think we have holes everywhere; some are deeper than others, some will be filled quicker than others

If Bell can play; offer him and hope he signs THAN we worry about if we NEED him

Never back down from interest in a kid, like an Ivy or Bell....

even if bigger schools are after them.....even if you lose them, you wish them well and let them know that if things don't work out wherever they go that they would always be welcome at indiana state if he would ever decide to transfer.....that works...we did that when dennis raetz was the head coach....we would get a lot of kids on the bounce back....after they were at bigger schools for a year or two.....

you NEVER turn down a talented kid.....unless there are other reasons, such as academics or off-field problems.....

I feel there are many kids who could get offers from ISU and "big time" programs that will seriously consider signing with the Trees to get immediate, quality playing time and recognition instead of being just a member of another team. When they are that good they have an ego to feed--they just have to decide on the diet.

Brown just graduated and Gates is a senior next year, right? So we definitely need running backs for the future.

As for being 5'7" that should be meaning less. Maurice Jones-Drew is 5'7" and it doesn't seem to be a problem for him. Barry Sanders is just 5'8" and he's arguably the best running back ever.

Bent...I'm not knocking Bell being 5-7.....

but sometimes it does scare away bigger schools.....just like it does NFL teams.....how did San Diego end up with Darrin Sproules....or Michael Turner......they weren't high round draft picks.....their small size scared away some teams.....same as the Colts taking guys like Freeney, Mathis, Sanders and Brackett....all smaller guys...other NFL teams weren't as interested in them...due to their smaller sizes......it doesn't mean that they can't play.....

Most of the major schools want the prototypical running back.....5-9 to 6-3.....180 to 225 pounds....who all run 4.3 in the 40....lol......but when they do that, it leaves the smaller, talented backs for other schools.....like an Indiana State......

Size means everything. Bobby Petrino sat me down in his office and said if I weighed 235 pounds by the end of my senior year he would offer me. I never got above 210 (but David Marmon at ISU got me to 260 lol).

This kid is probably more of the same, they may offer him a grayshirt to get him in as a KR specialist but I doubt he would get a serious look at RB in the very beginning. If he destroyed on scout team his first two years he may find a place in the rotation at a big school, but I don't see him ever being a feature back. For every Maurice Jones-Drew there are 100,000 Maurice Jones-Drew-esque running backs that never do anything because of their size.

Offer him, send a call a week his way and see what happens. At 5'7 you shouldn't be looking at getting playing time, you should be looking at going to the best school you can go to, even if it means not having a scholarship for a year or two.

Oh, and Garrett Wolfe almost won the Heisman playing at Northern Illinois. He's also 5'7". I get what you guys are saying, just pointing out the exceptions.

RB's vs. Line

Seems like what we needs is to strengthen line positions. Roster has several returning RBs that were all everything when recruited. They need space to run. I'm Just Askin.
