Jay Thomas told this story on Letterman's show. It is about Clayton Moore, who played the Lone Ranger on television. He was known for taking his role seriously and never breaking character in public.

I saw the Lone Ranger at Thompson's Honda when it was back by the courthouse in Terre Haute in the 70's. He was dead serious about being the Lone Ranger, not some actor in a costume. He looked much older than he did in that picture, though.
