The Sycamore Level
I came across the The Loyola Project Documentary. In this doc current Loyola player Lucas Williamson sits down and examines the racial tensions faced by the Ramblers 1963 basketball team during the height of the civil rights movement.

I'm not expecting the project to be a huge draw, nor a cash generator. But its a pretty interesting way to promote the team and the school itself. It would be cool to see Indiana State do something similar with Wooden's refusal to play in the 1947 NAIB National Tournament.

Noble effort but likely a lost cause - Loyola's project will draw eyes because they are discussing the NCAA tournament

far, FAR fewer people will follow Indiana State's story because it was the NAIA (nee' NAIB) tournament - they SHOULD because the NAIA tourney was the first national, post-season tournament to integrate - the NIT and NCAA integrated in 1949-50 by CCNY

Indiana State played in 12 NAIB tournaments between 1942 and 1963. They won in 1950, finished second twice and third once.
I have six of the tourney programs and continue to look for the other six.

I know a ULouisville fan who only considers their 3 NCAA titles to be "national titles"... he gives no recognition to their 1948 NAIB or their 1956 NIT titles

The UL Cardinals are the only MBB program in the nation to have won all three of the those titles

I believe Indiana State is the only program to have finished as the Runner-Up in the NAIA (NAIB, NCAA College Div (Div II) and the NCAA University Div (Div I) tournaments... imagine the prestige if we'd have added a NIT Finals appearance to that list....

The third place finish in 1953(????) was the wild one. Having scored 100 pts. in three consecutive games (a tourney first) they lost to
Southwest Missouri in the semifinals game. SWM finished the game with 4 players (due to fouls). ISU won the 3rd place game.
All accounts describe the ISTC vs SWM as the "real" championship game.
Bird's jr. year was our NIT shot....but we were hosed @ Rutgers.
