While there is debate as to whether this year's pitching staff will match last years in attaining a 4.61 ERA and 35 wins...one thing is certain. What you saw last weekend isn't an indication of what they can and will do this season. Word is that the pitchers had been ahead of the hitters and were looking sharp in practices leading up to lst weekend's deflating opening of the pre-season. Jitters? Rust? Call it what you may, but this coming weekend at Tennessee-Martin, you'll see improvements.

Your thoughts?

By the way, indication is that the games will be carried on-line by WUTM-FM, the Tennessee-Martin campus station. The gosycamores.com schedule/results page is showing games one and three being broadcast.

I hope so. One thing that seems to have played to our advantage the past two seasons is a strong start to the season. I think confidence can go a long way, especially for pitchers. I hope last weekend didn't rattle them too much.

bent20...you're very right. Given talent, the real game is played between the ears. It is the ability to shake off a bad outing. It is a mental game meant for tough, determined attitudes. We have seen a lot of talented players go by the wayside because their heads aren't in the game.

I wouldn't put too much into what happened last weekend....

even though Indiana State has a great new indoor facility for baseball and softball, they were still indoors.....as compared to Dallas Baptist.....I am sure that they had probably been outside more than the Sycamores in terms of practice time....

I just know that when I worked at ISU, we usually would start the season with a trip south and get hammered early on.....and then progress steadily as the season continued.....and pitching was usually slow to come around right out of the indoor practice sessions......

Im with Tom

The 1st games are for getting live at bats/seeing live pitching (for hitters) and for pitchers, faceing live hitters and game situations! It only gets better from here!

northern college teams usually get off to a slower start against...

southern-based programs.....like Indiana State did against Dallas Baptist.....that's one series...there's plenty of time to get going....

Sure, but we're going to have to be outstanding in conference play for that to happen, so why not focus on winning the conference.

Because it doesn't matter how well you do in conference, if you tank in the non-conference portion. Our RPI will be built or trashed in the non-con, our conference isn't good enough for us to build the rpi with lots of conference wins.

before people start doing the sky is falling routine....

let's get past the first series of the season and see what happens over the next few weeks....its one series.....move on......

Nothing i said was based on a "the sky is falling" feeling. Just stating the fact that in order to have a chance for an at large birth, we'll have to make some noise in the non conferece portion. I think we'll be fine, i dont actually think we'll be as good as last year, but should be playing much better by the midway point.

BlueBleeder....I wasn't referring to you....lol....

just the general tone....of everybody after dropping the first series of the season....win the mvc tournament....and go to the ncaa tournament...that's how it's been done at indiana state before.....

But that's not how it should be done! It's an option, but it should be let's have 35-40 wins and hope to get an at large berth in case you don't win conference. Let's face it, you won't win conference championship every year!

40 wins dont get you in

I would like to see a solid winning season, winning non confrence games is a big plus! Then win the Valley or at least second. Then go to the tournament and make a run! Its all about post season and wins gets you there!

For my luck 40 wins never got us in!

yeah, the 1985 team won 57 games.....

which still is a single-season school record....and didn't make it to the ncaa tournament.....that team finished second to wichita state in the mvc tournament...wsu got the bid...isu, with a better overall record, didn't.....so win the tournament....and get in.....

I believe they've expanded the tournament to 64 within the last couple years so 40+ wins might be enough now. Probably have to be 45 or more.

Looking at the pre-season totals for the past two years. In 2009, we went 12-7. In 2010, we went 13-5. Weather permitting, we'll have 21 pre-conference games. Lots of opportunities to see what we're made of.

57 wins and no tourney? That's unreal! How many teams made the NCAA tourney that year?

It would take 50 wins to get in this year because the non conference schedule is so weak. Seriously, why would we schedule a D-2 team as a weekend series? I understand playing them during a mid week, but that's a waste of a weekend.

ISU played Division II and NAIA schools in weekend series all the time...

in the early non-conference schedule when coach Warn was there....ISU played the likes of Wisconsin-Parkside.....
